Softlayer Adds Private Peering with Comcast
I just read this on their forums.Softlayer is pleased to announce that we have turned up a private 10G peer with Comcast in Dallas. This will bring our total capacity in Dallas to 70Gs.
Dallas, TX (dal01) - 70Gs
Verio - 20G (2x 10G)
Level3 - 10G
Savvis - 10G
Global Crossing - 10G
Internap - 10G
Comcast - 10G private peering Which other providers have this?

ThePlanet, FDCservers. I don't know what's private about it. Comcast is peering with anyone that will peer with them. Im sure there are many more companies that are peering with them.
This will do Comcast users alot of good as Comcast continues to reduce data caps and eventually has to answer to the government as to who gave them the all monopoly free passes

Has large number of end users on their network.
Works well for a large American data-center Company to peer with them. Makes more sense actually.

A backbone built out on CRS-1 multichassis cores with Nx40G and testing 100G links is nothing special? AS7922 has a pretty decent collection of peers with multi-region ingress/egress. http://www.fixedorbit.com/AS/7/AS7922.htm
What do you want? A route server that allows you to play global thermonuclear war?

Comcast's network is decent, some areas of their infrastructure are better than others.
One can get spectacular routing anywhere from Maryland, but get crap routing to anywhere from California.
Everything in between varies.
It is a massive network, no doubt about it, but with most things on a massive scale, they aren't perfect.
This primarily adds benefits for Comcast customers who happen to connect to a Softlayer-hosted machine. In those cases, you'll get better routes through the Comcast network.

Level(3) has direct peering with Comcast already, so if you have L3 you are already just 1 hop away.

Not really one hop, comcast peers with level3 in some locations, so while I may go direct comcast from Chicago to here (philadelphia) I may have to go Level3 to New York where they peer with Comcast then down to here.
Just an example, you can see it all the time where you go out of the way to go where Comcast peers with Level3 or GLBX. Softlayer added Comcast and now I go directly down to there, not up to New York first like I used to. It cuts down the number of hops by about 2-3 but the latency isn't really any better.

As Comcast are a massive end user provider that must be good news.
