Researchers have created "5D" data storage technology using high-speed lasers, that could allow 500TB of data to be written to a glass disc the same as as a CD, according to the Optica society.

Engadget reported today that the technique uses higher writing speeds that might finally make it feasible to use the technology for archival and other purposes, also pointing out that's 10x more data than Blu-ray discs.

It's been estimated that it could withstand temperatures up to 1,000 degrees C and last almost 14 billion years at room temperature without degrading.

"With the current system, we have the ability to preserve terabytes of data, which could be used, for example, to preserve information from a person’s DNA," said Peter G. Kazansky, research team leader.
