I'm having trouble(s) with my pc right now, so I don't have mine plugged in. But 2 of my many PC's use backup hdd's.
I use the 1tb(1000gig) Maxtor STM310004SSA20G-RK extrnal.
It is very nice, very quick relay. It doesn't matter how big your external is, that all depends on what your storing at 1 given time.
What you want to look at is the RPM's, mine is a 7200 RPM. You also want to look at the Cache and Network card. You should make sure you have a 16mb cache atleast, and atleast a 100mbps network card capability. Mine is a 16mb cache, with a 1000mbps network.
Hope this helps!
---------Edit----------
If you have the money, mine only cost me $300 for each.

500GB Lacie Rugged hardrive.
Pretty fast for a 5400RPM drive, it's got Firewire 800, and feels... chuckable. and I dont need to worry about it getting damaged.
- looks cool too.

I have had several WD's fail on me quite quickly - Seagate seems to be pretty reliable.

I've got a Lacie and a Freecom external hard drive. Both function quite well, although I think the Freecom performs a bit better.

I prefer maxtor, so I did some google searching. Like any other computer hardware out there, it was a mixed reveiw. I did read something about maxtor using seagate technology So, hmm dunno!
I think they are both great, but I would take Maxtor. It all depends on the persons own stand point though.
