What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is the more interactive aspect of the Web that has evolved in the 2000s. The term Web 2.0 applies to websites that use not only content that their owners provide but also user-generated content. Web 2.0 means providing and using a variety of tools to make the Web more interactive, faster, and easier to use. Another way to define Web 2.0 is that it's a more interactive approach to how people use the Web.
Social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are examples of Web 2.0 sites. But any website can be a Web 2.0 site by having options for users to interact with the site and with other users.
How to use Web 2.0 to increase website traffic
To increase website traffic using Web 2.0 techniques, create content that users will want to bookmark and ways for them to interact.
Unique, quality content has always been important to bringing visitors to websites. In addition to regularly adding new content, place social bookmarking icons on each page to make it easier for users to bookmark content. Social bookmarking brings more site visitors, and the inbound links help with search engine optimization.
Provide a variety of ways for users to interact:
- Publish new content via a blog and RSS feeds, allow blog comments, and reply to comments that ask for a reply.
- Ask for reviews and ratings of your services and products.
- Invite users to contact you with any questions or comments.
- If your audience is large enough and is interested in interacting, consider having a forum or wiki at your site.
How to use Web 2.0 beyond your website
With Web 2.0, company representatives don't just wait for people to come to their websites. You can go to other relevant websites and interact there:
- Set up a company profile at social media sites and have a staff member be responsible for maintaining those pages and interacting with other users.
- Create a Twitter account and tweet about developments in your industry and within your company. Respond to relevant tweets from account followers.
- Become an active and helpful forum member.
- Write articles as a guest writer for various sites, and reply to comments to your article.
- Comment about other articles that are relevant to your website content.
