Who can write or edit company profiles

All WebHostingTalk members with accounts in good standing can write or edit company profiles within these guidelines. You don't need to own or have any connection with a company to write about it. You just need to have accurate information about it and be able to contribute without bias.

Because members who aren't connected with a company can contribute to company profiles, "we" language should be avoided. For example, instead of writing "We provide..." write" "CompanyName provides...."

Writing guidelines for company profiles

The content:

  • Must be written from a neutral point of view.
  • Must be factual only. Please add or edit content only if you have facts to share.
  • Cannot promote or criticize the company in any way. (But see Facts and legal matters below.)

Neutral point of view

Personal experiences are not within the neutral point of view requirement for WHTwiki. See Where to discuss web hosting and related companies below.

Facts and legal matters

Company profiles may include factual information about legal matters on public record. If a company has been sued, for example, facts about the case may be included. The facts must be verifiable with a link to an objective source such as a government record.

What you can include in company profiles

These types of content are allowed and encouraged in company profiles:

  • The history of the company: when it was started, past and present ownership, name changes and mergers, verifiable legal issues
  • Where the company and its services are located
  • A list of services that the company provides (just a list, without details)
  • Short bios of company owners
  • The names of any trade or professional organizations with recognized industry status that the company belongs to, such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB)
  • Photos of the company owners and places of business
  • Links to the company website home page and Terms of Service (TOS) pages

What you cannot include in company profiles

These types of content are not allowed in company profiles:

  • Superlatives such as best, cheapest, most popular, or their opposites
  • Promotional expressions such as state-of-the-art and top-of-the-line
  • Comparisons with other companies or services
  • Pricing, plan, or other sales details
  • Logos or other images or content that could be considered promotional
  • Praise or criticism of the company or of any individuals who are or have been connected with it
  • Quotes, speculation, or statements of opinion or experience
  • Suggestions to use or not use the company's services
  • Links to the company website (other than to its home page and TOS), advertisements, press releases, customer feedback, online discussions or commentary, or any other pages that could be considered promotional or biased

Where to discuss web hosting and related companies

If you'd like to ask about a provider in the web hosting industry or post a review of one, we invite you to post in the WHT forum. Note that for reviews, we require first-hand experience of providers. We'll ask for a domain hosted with the web host you review or other information that we can use to verify first-hand experience.

You can also search the WHT forum for posts about specific providers.
