WHTwiki:About

WHTwiki (WebHostingTalk Wiki) is a web hosting wiki, for and about the web hosting industry. It's a place where our industry can tell its growing story. Here, we can capture and share our knowledge, profile, history, and more.

What are wikis?

Wikis are collaborative writing projects that typically use one of a number of free wiki software packages available. With a wiki program installed at a website, everyone with access to the wiki can contribute to and edit pages, help organize them, remove inappropriate content, discuss changes to be implemented, and so on. Some wikis (such as this one) require registration to take part, while at others, anyone can contribute.

Everyone with editing access to a wiki is a potential moderator of sorts. When users (members) see a problem such as advertising or vandalism, they can fix the problem themselves — or let the wiki admins know about it. Wiki participants have that choice.

To learn more about wikis, see the Wikipedia page on wikis.

What is WHTwiki?

A collaborative writing project, WHTwiki grew out of the WebHostingTalk forum, which is the largest and most active web hosting forum online. The WHT forum has been online since 2000, and WHTwiki was launched in July 2007.

Why have a wiki in addition to a forum? Because both are useful for what they do best. If you want to ask questions or take part in discussions about web hosting and related topics, go to the WHT forum. On the other hand, if you want to help build and update a quality web hosting resource, or to browse such a resource, that's what WHTwiki is for.

The spirit of WHTwiki

Collaboration and teamwork are the foundation of WHTwiki. When you start a page, edit it, expand it, discuss its content, or fix or report problems, you're part of the WHTwiki team.

Participation for the benefit of the community is part of the WHTwiki spirit. Promoting one's services in the wiki is not. We ask that everyone respect the intent behind WHTwiki, and we encourage members to use their wiki editing abilities to help fix problems when they happen.

Our main policies are on the Policies page, which has links to other pages with more information.

How to participate

WHT forum members are WHTwiki members. If you have a WHT account in good standing, you can take part at WHTwiki. You can log in either at the WHT forum or via the login link at the top right of any WHTwiki page.

If you aren't a WHT member yet, you can register here.

To find out what you can do, see Participate.

WHTwiki usernames

If your WHT username has a space, hyphen, or other non-alphanumeric characters, the WHTwiki software will remove spaces and add a hyphen and numbers to your username. It will also capitalize usernames that aren’t capitalized for forum use. We’re working on a fix for this, but for WHT purposes, it’s the same username.

WHTwiki administration

As of July 2007, the WHTwiki admins are the WHT forum admins. When WHTwiki grows, we’ll be looking for interested and responsible members to help with WHTwiki administration.

Who owns WHTwiki?

WHT (forum and wiki) is among the community-driven web portals in the iNET Interactive portfolio. iNET is a leading new media content management agency and takes an active role in maintaining and developing its websites.
