Platform-specific hosting

The term hosting platform refers to the software on which other application programs can be run to provide hosting services. There are many kinds of hosting platforms on the market, each supporting certain software that must be pre-installed on clients' systems. Examples:

  • PHP hosting (.php, .phtml)
  • ASP hosting (.asp, .aspx)
  • Rails hosting
  • Cold Fusion hosting (.cfm)
  • JSP hosting (.jsp)

Hosting platforms can also be described in terms of the operation system being used on the server. The most common operating systems are Windows hosting and Linux hosting.
