Email hosting
Email hosting is simply a hosting service or plan that basically allows people to send, receive, and store email. The hosting provider hosts an email service on what are known as email servers.
Typically, an email hosting provider offers a service that is much different from conventional free email providers such as Yahoo! or HotMail, but which has a price tag attached to it. The service was primarily created for and targeted at those who have a high demand for email uses that must ensure availability and security. It’s also targeted at serious small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs who want to avoid investing in email servers.
Features of email hosting
All email hosting providers offer standard email services like POP3, IMAP, and Webmail access. They also allow their clients to use their domain names for emailing by either changing their MX or NS settings.
Some additional features include:
- Calendar, tasks, to-do lists, notes
- Share data and collaboration features
- Ability to synchronize contacts and calendar items with email clients (LDAP and iCal)
- Backup and archive features
- Spam protection (mail rules, blacklist, and whitelist)
