How to move servers with a special agreement?

We currently use a provider that offered us discounted services, free managed support and quiet a few other nice feature, as long as we only sell from them. Well we are now having issues with our provider and we were wondering how would we move without causing a disruption or issue. Also, they do manage our domain as they provided it to us for free as we didn't have any money to start up with and we aren't sure how to obtain our domain without a issue of security.

That would be a tough situation to be in... have you signed any official documentation with them? If you do you might have to "buy" out from them and come to some agreement terms. Although if you're having issues you could simply say, they aren't performing up to the capacity that's needed to run your business...

Ask the host to transfer the domain to you. Once you have the domain and files in your hand, as long as you don't have any signed contracts you are free to move to any provider you wish.

If they are not nice on giving you your domain, you may have a few options to persuade them.

We haven't signed any documents with them which is good, hopefully can get the domain transfered to us or at least buy it from them. Thanks for the help.

Did they register the domain name in your name? Worst case scenario you can always go directly to the registrar and have them transfer the domain name to you.

It looks like it was registered under a proxy company.

Seriously, you mean you did not have $10 to purchase a domain name? How did you pay for the server then?

In anycase hopefully you have learnt a lesson from this. Always make sure to keep your domain name under your own control and not bundled with the services of your provider.
