I'm looking for cheap(ish) and stable VPS hosts
Hey WHT
I'm looking for VPS hosts that can provide me with at least:
>> 400GB Bandwidth
>> Decent CPU
>> 512 MB RAM
>> OpenVZ or Xen will work fine.
If you're going to list an OpenVZ host- it better be good. I've had experience with way too many OpenVZ hosts that over-cram their boxes and I get a crap experience with it, deeming the server useless.
>> Price: no more than $18/mo
>> Location: U.S. (mostly)
If you have UK VPS's I would also like to hear those.
So on my list I currently have:
http://chicagovps.net/
http://www.rockmyweb.net/
The 2 above have both reported maintenance within the past 7 days, but otherwise has been stable. Of course I've only had them for 6-8 days.. but each only had 1 downtime not lasting more than 1-4 hours.
<offtopic-rage>

ThrustVPS is crossed off my list. They are absolutely terrible.
I'm hosting game servers so they need a stable connection and stable output from CPU. Thrust has not been able to provide that in any means on any of their servers, no matter witch location or node I am transferred to. If I was hosting a website I may not of noticed the shotty performance, but with a game server it's blatently obvious- and I've been getting a lot of bad service with them.
Support is also not helpful, slow to respond and will not try to fix your problem unless it's an obvious offline server. Even with 20% packetloss they wouldn't even try to fix, I had to show them logs from 60-80% packetloss from 20 different locations until they moved me to a new node, witch still has the same packetloss of 5-10%

Thanks for reading the long thread and I hope you can help me out with this

Great those looks really good.
I'll try them both out- IntroVPS.com has a good Europe location that would work just as well as the UK one I was looking for.

Bear in mind that for this type of implementation, you often get what you pay for in terms of going cheap vs. going with a reputable company even if said company is more expensive than you'd like
Factor in the downtime and the time it takes you to move and set up a new system as well. You might be surprised what you might find if you loosen up the budget a bit. Don't get me wrong, budget's a good thing and an important thing to have, but you might consider bumping it up a bit or going for a range, like "okay, let's find something for $15-25/mo". You seem to have a reasonable budget as it is, don't get me wrong, i'm not saying your budget is too low. What I'm saying is, figure out a comfortable range, find companies on both ends of the spectrums. Do research. Ask questions. Don't be afraid to take a good company with a good reputation because they're $5/mo more. I fell into that trap myself years ago, and it literally killed my site jumping host to host. It's a balancing act -- price vs. reputation vs. stability, etc.
Most of the time, a budget provider simply can't afford to offer services unless it can be assumed that the hardware utilization will be moreso than it might be on a higher-end system. It's very much so a balancing act. Of course, some providers go out of their way to cram as much as they can on the box until people start complaining. A possible suggestion -- ask the company directly how they determine when a box is "full". Ask them what acceptable load is to them.
Regardless, there's a number of budget providers out there that offer excellent services, my main point is to be wary of offers -- do your research on the company (and parent company too, if that's the case as it often is). Ask questions. Lots of them. These people are going to control the reputation of your gameserver. Don't be afraid of spending $5-10 more than your budget if someone really sticks out to you.
Good luck to you

I'll be wanting to get 5+ VPS's - any other suggestions would be helpful.
I haven't signed up on the above yet and I'm doing my research on the companies. Both come up with positive and negative feedback with their services.

Positive and negative feedbacks are both useful, actually. It'll give you a more realistic Window into how a company handles their customers.
It'd be rare and possibly concerning to see a company without as well. I mean, fact of life is, a company can't possibly be compatible with all customers. You'll invariably have people be unhappy at some point, and some will choose to air their issues.
What i'd suggest is to look at how the matters were handled. Were they ignored? Was the customer being unreasonable? Was the host responsive and professional?
Sometimes people's negativity isn't always warranted, but they dish it out anyways . And the same goes for the webhost.

Check out VPSLatch, im sure if you work with their sales department they can figure out a plan within your budget, not to mention they are fully managed with free cPanel.

Burst Premium VPS looks like the best option for me. They've been around for a long time and have good standings in stability and support.
They'll be the next provider I'll be giving a go at- thanks for all your suggestions.

If you're not needing a control panel, you should be able to find something in your budget, though it is a little bit at the low end. As you've seen, a lot of the providers fighting at the bottom of the price range are not providing the kind of service you've been looking for. For a couple dollars more, you should be able to find a really solid host. Compared to the costs of switching hosts regularly when you are disappointed, this may actually end up cheaper in the long run.
Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I think I would be a bit scared of hosts that only have positive reviews and absolutely no negative. That would suggest that they either A) don't have very many customers for a good reason, B) have not been in business very long and may run the risk of being an overnight host, C) faked reviews from fake people
And now, if you'll let me give my recommendation of Linode.. Absolutely amazing service, rock solid servers (especially the New Jersey location). I ran game servers on a VPS I had from Linode once and it was like perfection. Give it a try. You might just find yourself impressed.
