I've got two VM's. Largest one is 120 gigs with 4 gigs memory. As mentioned a few months back when I ended up at gigenet I need a cloud with fast I/O's as I am running a fairly large forum.
Obviously cost is a factor, but I'm not going to throw out a price, I'd like to see some suggestions and I'm sure with the way cloud hosting is going there are new options since the last time I did this.

How large of a forum do you have? Have you considered getting a lower spec server (QC) with SSD disks? Considering you have two unmanaged VMs, you're probably already familiar with the system and should be able to implement some quick wins in terms of performance.

I would agree with Joe.If you are DB intensive, dedi with ssd is the way to go

Yea I moved from a dedi to the cloud a few months ago and have been pretty happy. I'm still not sure I'm going to move, but I'd like to have some alternatives locked and loaded if I decide too. maybe i will consider going back to a dedi.

Are you having trouble with the new provider? I remember talking a few months back. Not a ton has changed in that time but the fact still remains that the underlying infrastructure does need to match that of your needs. Ie: proper SAN/local storage pooling, HDD type, caching, etc to achieve your goals.
How are things going BTW?

I've had pretty good success with gigenet. Site has been stable, support is top notch. HOWEVER this latest price increase with only a couple days notice has really got me spooked. They've straitened everything out and I am planning on sticking with them, however I figure I need a plan b in case something like this comes up in the future. Sooo, going on a previous suggestion I was going to get a little list together and do some I/O tests just so I know I have something to fall back on.

Very good, thanks for asking. We have a fully vertical scalable Windows 2008 R2 WISA application going now so we're about to launch that for a few clients. That's been a huge task.
That's an unfortunate thing, but not surprised either. Much of the younger providers and/or younger services may not be priced properly. Even Rackspace has made some recent changes to some of their Cloud billing mechanisms. Also some may have been priced just fine, but then the provider finds that they had a flawed infrastructure design and with shelling out a lot in "upgrades" they find they are no longer profitable at the current price.
Amazon and Voxel have and/or are close to launching their "Database" Public Cloud offerings, which is basically just as we talked about and the providers are building Clouds based on high IO capable hardware (Voxel is SSD, and Amazon's I'm not sure about). We still only do this in Private Clouds as the demand just isn't there yet for us on our Public Clouds but someday I imagine we'll toss one up. That is something to look more into. I imagine the buzzwords will either be something along the lines of "High IO Cloud" or "Database Cloud" when searching.

It would appear that I may need to "fast track" this process LOL Gonna look at dedi's and go from there. I've got one VM I need to keep on a cloud somewhere as that's what the guy pays me for and potentially take back what I said about their support lol.
Anyone know if gigenet cloud got bought out or something? I swear it's like a night and day change from a week ago.

I was affected just like you, but decided to stay due to few reasons:
1. they offer true cloud infrastructure
2. they have great reputation in dedicated server line
3. they have great network uptime
4. they have fast disk IO

Well I hate to bring it up here, but I had a run in with support that really rubbed me the wrong way tonight, otherwise I would be singing the same tune as you.

Yes we read all the feedback and we will respond to it all. If there is a performance issue after the latest upgrades just completed, I can assure you our programmers and support are all over it. We know increasing the price is not a popular move and we apologize for not sending out the notice with a longer advanced notice - yes we should haven been smarter then to just respond and send out a notification at least a few weeks in advance - we got the message and will make certain that we send advanced notice on anything in the future. We did not take this lightly or with the intention get everyone mad at us or reduce performance. We take everything we read serious and will do our best to earn back the trust of all our clients. We have a great product, not yet perfect but we are working like madmen to get there.
