Intercoms, surprisingly hard to find some with good reviews.
I am the Primary Care Giver for my mother. Basically I am her Medical Advocate, I enforce her DNR, Executor of her Will, on duty chauffeur, whatever she needs I get. Since I live in the Basement Lair, she is supposed to come to my door and flash the lights so I'll come up and she doesn't walk down my stairs (because she falls 99% of the time she tries to walk them unless she's putting all her weight on me). I've been searching for intercoms to place in my room and her room so she can just page me, or just pop on and tell me what she needs.
I thought when she got a laptop she could just use aim, msn, gtalk, skype, any number of the tools I showed her but she seems to prefer trying to walk my stairs. We've discussed the intercoms a lot, but every time I get to a site and look at the product reviews it's always a very low rating and reviews that steer me away. I know this is off base, but hey what's the Lounge for then? If anyone can provide a link to something not torn apart in it's reviews I'd be happy. Meanwhile I'll keep digging until I "wake up" in 2ish hours to drive her to Gastroenterologist appointment.WHT is now used as the Universal Hosting Helpdesk.

I am not sure about what intercom you have there, how good or bad they are.
Do it yourself and setup a bell with button at her end. She just press the button and you get the buzz.Vinsar.Net - Quality Web Hosting at Economical Price on USA & European Servers

Well, she decided that after recently falling 3 times (I had to physically run and jump onto the stairs to stop her last fall) that she isn't going anywhere today. It gives me more time to search. I came across a decently rated pair of wireless intercoms that can be set to VOX mode so she just has to speak and doesn't even have to press a button for me to hear her. I rescheduled her appointment so I may order this pair. They come with both AC adapters and battery slots so she can take the com into the shower to call me if she falls. It seems to have some good bonuses to it.

RadioShack - aka the Source, if they still exist used to sell multi-station intercoms.
The walkie talkie is a good idea, especially if you have "vox".
Then consider sideways thinking. walkie talkies became baby monitors.
Also look at security company offerings. After all, they have those door intercom things.
You really do need a multi-station setup. Including one at the top of the stairs.
