What applications do you have running on the server, and/or are you running any custom apps? Do you have any sort of caching scheme in place (query caching or page caching)? If not, this may be the answer to your question.

I assume this is a dedicated server, correct? No one else is sharing server resources with you? I have to say, I'm not terribly impressed with the performance of the Q9550. I think there are much better processors out there for the money, but this sounds like a process running wild, or usage spike on a certain script - something like that.

I think the server might have quite a low spec for the users online.

You serouisly need to check your script wether or not your reciving DDOS or some kind of attack.

You cannot be to sure what is causing it?

Do you use any kind of control panel IE, Cpanel/DA/Kloxo ?

May I know your domain.
May i ask something else?

Is it your own custom script? Just because if it a CMS system or so on.
You can avoid such load issues, by installing mods.

Have you tired installing any optimization mysql/nginx ?

I don't think gninx is the solution for you. You really haven't told us much about your setup, or what you have done to troubleshoot this issue. Some detail is appreciated

Do you know if it's a runaway PHP script or some other issue? Upgrading your server or trying to do any kind of optimizations will be useless unless you have an idea of what is causing your high load.

What is the output of top and/or ps auxf when the cpu usage is high?

First things first, I would check if there is a process that is running non stop. You can check proceses by going to the following page in cPanel!

Main >> System Health >> Show Current CPU Usage

You might consider hiring a server management company to check out the server - especially if you aren't sure what you're doing.

They would be able to investigate what's causing the issue, and help you optimize things.

Just my two cents

This has Rack911 written all over it. Steven's superb at diagnosing critical server issues and handling optimizing/hardening/etc. www.rack911.com

Judging by citywidehost's signature, I'd say he'd recommend Bobcares
