IT Related Jobs
Hello WHTers. I am actually applying for college this month, and I don't really know which specific field to enter in. I am pretty good with computers, and want something computer related. What are some good options out there? I don't want to be a IT Tech since it has a smaller salary, and tend to do more work. Thanks!

As cheesy as it sounds, pick a field that interests you and find a way to make money at it. Doing it the other way around will not be as satisfying in the end.
In school, I had some friends that were "MIS" majors - Management Information Systems - they graduated with a highly marketable degree and a nice sized paycheck. Fairly general field with a ton of potential.
Good luck with the college apps!Kyle Haynes - Limestone Networks - Director of Sales & Marketing

Have you considered Computer Science or EE (Electrical Engineering)? Those are very broad fields that can get you into a bunch of positions.

It may seem that way. But it's very different from company to company. Are you referring to Geek Squad or people works at motherboard section @ Fry's? (No puns intended!) "IT tech" can mean many things - desktop support, computer engineer, sysadmin, computer analyst... etc.
You need to ask yourself what you really enjoy doing. NOT - "how much would I make after college." If you are good with math, likes to solve complicated issues, tinkering with hardware... then EE may be more suitable. If you are comfortable sitting on front of a computer for long hours, don't mind working by yourself, likes to command the computer... then, CS may be more suitable for you.
I have a friend graduated from UT Austin with an EE degree and couldn't find a job to sponsor his work status for an year. Dude had to go back to his country. I have friends spent 4~5 years at UT Austin getting EE degree. Start-out salary is less than me not having a degree but with two years of experience in the industry (well, most of them either match or makes more than me now.)
There is a lot of variables comes into play. At the end of the day, you can make six digits but you don't enjoy your job at all, waking up every morning disgusted having to go to work... I'm sure you won't be happy.
Also, attitude means a lot too. I've seen brilliant people with skills but bad attitude, 10+yrs and still in a junior position. This is generally true in IT world. Be true to yourself and others takes you a long way.Last edited by quad3datwork; 11-02-2010 at 02:00 AM. Reason: typos
