I buy all my domains from GoDaddy....except .co.uk (LCN) or .es (EuroDNS).
Hosting? Well it's generally better to host nearer your target audience so the majority of my sites are in the UK.....with the US ones hosted over there.

For domains.. It really does not matter, they are all in the same registries...
For hosting, although some people would argue that it is better to be closer to the target audience, I believe that it is better to find the best deal with the best hosting company you can find! If you see the difference in between hosting in Leeds (from London) average 54ms ping time and hosting in Chicago (from London) average 138ms - although the figures show something rather different (more than double) I challenge you to actually physically seeing the difference?
The most important thing is to find your best value for money!
Hope This Helps!
Alex

It does not matter. We are based in Germany but have our .com domains with Godaddy.

I agree, the difference is not all that great for most websites. However, if you have large pages (big files) or a high number of files per web page, the visitors' experience may be affected in a more significant manner. Then there's the SEO benefit (in case you don't use the country specific TLD): http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=62399
A good number of hosts from all over the world use US based servers, so ask, rather than assume where the server is placed.
As for the domain registrar, other than going for an experienced, well reputed one, I wouldn't worry too much where they're from.

I confirm.
For the domain name, it does not matter.
But for hosting, it matters. Your website and download rate should be fast if you want to keep your visitors or customers. You should take a server from a partner in UK.

GoDaddy, NameCheap, Enom are all registrars I've used with positive results. As far as speeds/cost/security/data security it's not going to have any bearing on it (where you get the domain, that is).
What is more important, which others have alluded to, is where the hosting provider is located and not where the registrar is located.
My ultimate pieces of advice are to register the domain somewhere other than the hosting company and to always maintain your own off-provider backups no matter what the provider promises.

Buying a domain from USA or UK does not matter as long as they are reputed, have proven track record. Though for hosting it does matter where your server is, nearer to your visitors faster will be sites, people mostly get servers and host in USA because it's cheaper there along with huge and better network but I feel UK too has competing network. I will most preferably host sites in my country if I could find similar servers with similar pricing along with good network.

The big advantage to purchasing domains from your host is you can manage all of your domains using the same system you submit support tickets to, manage hosting accounts and addons like SSLs, etc.
Also say you had trouble updating nameservers or registering nameservers for certain types of TLDs, you or your host could change them within seconds/minutes.
Only get domains from a host if you trust them. It is not really a problem with hosts that have been running for more than 6 months + offer realistic hosting plans.
Hosting sites in a Datacenter closer to you and your target audience definitely helps traffic wise, etc.

hostgator got great security.
the speed will be good also if your site is a low traffic site ( if u need more power , you should know that by now).
and costs its up to you , would you put a bit more for a local provider
( EU provider ) or use a budget host like gator that is in the us.

You cant really compare HostGator and NameCheap together though. I think its more like NameCheap and GoDaddy. As for security risks, there is nothing to worry about because there isn't much they can do with your domain name. Both are very large reputable companies. Costs are pretty much the same unless one has a promotion going on where you can get them for a steal.
