packet loss after upgrade to GB switch

hi there

Yesterday I swapped over 20 cat 5 cables from a working Allied Telesyn 100MB switch to a new GB switch with new cat 6 cables. The old switch was working fine, we just wanted to upgrade.

Initially there was huge packet loss and lots of speed complaints. I resolved this by plugging the main 100MB/s internet feed back into the old switch (in its original port) then placed a jumper from the old switch to the new. This fixed the packet loss, but I want to retire the old switch completely.

What am I missing here? Does the internet feed have to have a special config set in the router for the port it's in? There does not seem to be a "standard" input port.

Best
Dude

Have you tried different brand NIC cables?

You will be surprised not all cables are made equal.

You may be need to specifically set the speed and duplex on the client stations (especially if using older NICs) than relying on auto-negotiate.

Sounds like duplex / speed on the upstream switch not the client machines. He use the old switch to pass down to the new switch with the clients plugged into the new switch so it's not from the clients to the switch.

I would check with the DC to see if they are forcing the port mode.

If you have a lot of collisions on your ports, you probably have a port set to full-duplex and one set to auto. The auto configured port will default to half-duplex. A mis-matched port speed would not be able to bring the link up.
