I just wanted to get a poll from a large number of people. I have a small handfull of votes and reasons why on this thread http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...threadid=98659 . Place your vote and it is up to you if you want to give your reason why.
Happy Holidays to all!

one time because you only buy hardware one time so why keep charging the end user for it monthly
maybe it would cost more up front but then your monthly fees are back down low

Because it allows the user to use more network resources typically .

which means more of a chance of going over which means high priced per GB pricing where you make a killing on bandwidth

Depends on the amount you bill for overages.
If your average client uses 1/4 of what you allocate them, it'd take a lot of upgrades before they hit overages

On hardware I would definately say a one time fee... a stick of RAM doesn't cost anyone $X a month, it's costs $50, $100, etc. right now. I can understand maybe having to pay an installation fee, but I wouldn't want to pay monthly for RAM. Some places do make you pay monthly for HDD space or an extra proc though.

Definately ONE-TIME fees.
As someone said before, I'd hate to buy a ferrari and pay $100/mo because I upgraded to a better stereo system.

I thought it was definite that you guys were going onetime shane?
The fact that you have monthly fees for extra hardware has kept me away from more powerful servers.

I vote for monthly fees. Why? Because the host not just only provide the hardware but also maintain the hardware. After calculating all costs involved, the hardware itself may not be as expensive as maintaining it. When the server goes bad at 2 am, the host has to replace it, etc. Just consider the monthly fees as the cost to insure/maintain your server.
If you want something to be always one time fees, why not just build your own server and colo it somewhere? It will certainly be cheaper for you, but then who is more responsible to maintain your hardware beside you yourself? If you want to upgrade a memory, buy it and send it to your host and have them install it. When it goes wrong at 2 am in the morning, wait until you have a replacement sent to your host. Sounds fair right?
Why should this poll decide anything for fastserver? If you don't like their charging a monthly fees for hardware upgrade, then by all means just get out and find whatever host that fit your budget. Fastserver has provided a good value for their servers, and some cheap people still rant ... what a WHT mentality. And I see some hosts that argue over this matter. Makes me wonder how profitable that host is to argue about some spare expense money!
Enough rant.

Hey, who's arguing? Not me, however $20+ for monthly ram is a bit excessive for 512mb's.

I think it's really a one sided issue...if you're the consumer you want a one-time fee so you can save money. If you're the provider, you want to charge monthly fees so you can make money. I really don't see why the consumer or provider would choose the other method.

A bit excessive? Then, buy your own ram and have them install it. That will bring down your cost, right? But again, when the ram goes wrong, you just have to buy another one, send them your ram, and have them install it.
What's so excessive about $20/month? How much money can you make out of a single server? I hope you are not suggesting me that given the profit of each server you have, you still think that $20/month is a bit excessive?
Any other host think that $20/month is a big excessive? I am eager to compile a list of such hosts, please do speak.

Shane,
If you decide to do one time, make sure you charge twice or tripple the cost. Nobody should tell you to sell your service at cost!

that depends, do you want your host shopping at the bi-way basement bargain bin for your hardware, or somewhere decent?
Go look up the price for 512MB of DDR pc333 RAM, it's *NOT* that cheap, sure 512MB of PC133, the dirt cheap slave labor assembled RAM may be around $50, but for a DDR dimm thats of brand name, and low density (32x8, quality), it's gonna cost a host probably around $120-140, which means he makes his money back in 6-7 months and then starts to get profit, whats so unfair about that?!
