Get started slowly but effectively,
1. Optimize your website with relevant keywords, title, code, meta tags
2. submit to search engine
3. keep updated your site with frequently with fresh and new contents

yes first of all try to read online resources and get some knowledge.After that join SEO forums and which questions do confuse you ask them from some experts.I think this is a good practice to start.

First optimize your site with title, site description and meta tags. Then do some directory submission, bookmarking, article submission etc. Make sure your site with unique content.

On site optimization is the optimization process of content and source code ,Website has to be Content full with relevant keywords, if we use any images or pictures you will have to use Alt attributes, and define TITLE Tag of the web page and Meta keywords. Do link your site with quality back links. Choose the best site for linking, good PR site with less external linking. Choose the only relevant category for submissions, Submit to blog, directories, articles, forums, press release. Also do some SMO.

SEOMoz says that rankings are 30% on-site SEO / 70% off-site SEO...
Many of the suggestions above are for on-site SEO. That's great. Do them. It's 30%.
However, you need links. That's 70% of SEO. Many of the same resources named above are good for how to get backlinks also. But you REALLY REALLY REALLY need to concentrate on this or you will never get any good rankings.
