Currently, i have a domain hosted at weinbar. I was wondering if i could just sign up for another virtual account somewhere and give them my domain without updating my DNS servers. This way, i could use the second account to store graphics & leech it from weinbar. And off course i will only be able to access the second account by using the IP address & not the domain.

Will this work? I do this because i dont want to sign up for another domain name.

Hello DJ,

Yes you propably can do this. But when you want to link the files at your second hosting accounts you have to insert the IP address as well.

Hope this can help.

Yupe ... i know that as well. I will also know that if the second virtual account is down ... my graphic will not load as well.

I need to know will this whole thing pull off? Will the second host know about this and what will they do if they knew it?

You have to look for a hosting plan which will provide you dedicated IP. Most of the host allowed hosting with IP only. As well as you don't over use the bandwidth they allowed. The best way to figure this out is send an e-mail to your second host before you sign up and ask then about this.

DJ, if you have access to a DNS server, you could point a subdomain to that IP and have it as i.e. http://graphics.domain.com/picture.gif

DJ,

I dont think there would be a problem unless the pictures you will be storing there are pornographic or adult oriented and the host you choose does not allow this. Otherwise as stated above unless you go over bandwidth or storage limits I would not see why it would be any problem. Of course this is just my view on the issue every host has their own policies so make sure you read the TOS and AUP policies of whomever you decide to go with..

There's another option you might not have thought about. I don't know who you're using to connect to the Internet, but most ISPs (Earthlink, AT&T, America Online, etc.) give you free space as part of the package. You'd access it by going to yourname.theirname.com or theirname.com/~yourname. The problem here is that most of them don't give you very much space (Earthlink only gives 6 MB for example ). But if you don't get enough, you might be able to purchase extra space at a reasonable rate and not have to worry about the domain name.

Another option is a Geocities-type account. Here the down side is that Geocities is slow.

The good part about getting a non-domain account is that you can move your images on a moments notice without having to worry about DNS propagating. Because of this, you might want to try combinations of free services and see what works best.

Sorry, i dont get what you mean by have access to a DNS server. If i dont have, where could i get one & do i have to pay for it? Currently, i could change the dns server for a domain from opensrs but never knew anything about sub-domain.

If I'm not misstaking www.mydomain.com offers free DNS services. But you might want to talk to your host first and see if they can help you set it up.

eh, i think it's best to use img.urdomain.com. if weinbar support DNS manage, u can add it urself, or just tell weinbar to setup the domain for u while u are signing up a new account.
