I dont use them for hosting but do use them at my other job all 6500 Dual 450MHZ (I think) and some 2300's not sure of the speed on those and I tell you they have ran pretty flawless for the past 3 years or so. So I dont really have any complaints over here. The only thing that gets to me it sometimes the support is a little shady and you need to really stay on them to get the on-site support actually on site.

I use them... although they are very expensive... the support contract makes it worth it.. anything happens 24x7x365 4 hours response on site.. helps me keep uptime existing .. Although they haven't required that yet (knock on wood) I can sleep better knowing I have SOMEBODY behind me .

Excellent servers. Support is great as well.

One thing to consider though, when you purchase a Dell server get the least amount of memory possible and then buy the memory direct from crucial.com. It's much cheaper and it's the exact same item.

Regarding colocating, the cost is definitely efficient. The markup for web hosting when managed properly is enough to cover the cost of a pretty well stacked PowerEdge 350 in less than one month. The 1650's aren't a whole lot more money but they are much better with SCSI, RAID, redundant power, the whole nine yards. Then there is the 2650. I just received my first 2650 two days ago. Wow, what a machine!

thanks for the input.

in terms of virtual hosting, what model (specs) do u suggest? how many clients do u suppsoe can fit on one machine. i know this is hard to say and depends on a number of variables, but a rough estimate will do

thanks

We use 2450 all the time. Very reliable! 4 drives give a perfect RAID5 configuration. Expensive? No way - not cheap but you get quality for an excellent price. Try IBM's and you won't get near the power you get with IBM's for the same money. Service is very good!

To echo, great servers, great support. Certainly not the cheapest servers around, but worth the money.

Did I mention how cool ERA/DRAC is? Wow. You can reboot a dell remotely, turn it off, turn it on, boot it from a floppy in your laptop, do text (linux) or graphics (windows) console redirect, and have it iron your shirts. All remote. 350's can't do it, but the 1650 and 2650 are nice.

Who needs an APC master switch now?

I'm quite excited about this 2650. What a monster of a machine.

Yes, I am one of the people who manges 5 of them. I am not using them for web hosting, however.

The servers are great. Can't say much about support as I never used it.

The Dell PowerEdge 1650 is a great machine
we are going to max ours out with 4gigs of ram and eventually a 2nd 1.4Ghz cpu...

it has dual 72.3gig scsi harddrives and raid 1..very very sweet.

Yes, I am just starting my web hosting company and I'm using a Dell Poweredge 6300 series.

I got it very cheap from a failing datacenter in upstate New York.

The thing is very large (4u), but the fact that it was cheap makes it a perfect option for a teenager "breaking" into the web hosting market.

Good machine, nothing has broken yet, and the Dell support is also very good.

We don't use them in our hosting business but I have used Dell servers before. They are top notch but the support is really what you're paying for. If you plan on supporting your own hardware then I'd reccommend either building your own or getting a custom-built server. Just get an extra HDD, proc, mb, and ram in case you have any problems. You still probably be under the price of the comprable Dell.

the majority of dell servers have 24/7 onsite 4 hour repair. I've had to use this before when one of the disks went bad in a machine that we had colo'd for work. After the datacenter determined the disk was bad, I simply called up dell and had them send tech support to the datacenter, called the colo to tell them some guy from dell would be showing up and had him replace the drive for us. Saved me a 2 hour trip to the colo facility!
