have narrowed my choices to Netherweb or Dream Host.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these hosts ? I am looking for as
much as I can get for less then $10 a month.
Aslo, is registering a domain with Joker.com a risk, since they are an unknown
company ?
Thanks for any comments I may receive.

Actually I have seen Dream Host in a few message boards.. Have you researched them well? I believe it was www.deja.com.. I would search there.
I suggest that to everyone looking for hosting.. RESEARCH, and always email them..If they want a new client they should answer within a time your comfortable with..
I didn't read about them.. But here is abother site with Dream Host on it.. http://www.tips-tricks.com/cgi-bin/u...tro&default=10 I hope that works...
I haven't heard of the other one..
Good luck!

Thanks Paula
I have done some research on Dream Host, and the reviews have been spectacular. That being said, I am hesitant to host anywhere after the terrible experience I had with Half Price Hosting.
I can't seem to find any reviews on Nethernet. Maybe they are too new, or too small to have reviews out.

From what I have heard about Netherweb, they are pretty good.

Also, a customer of mine registered a domain with Joker.com and it went pretty smooth.

Jenni,
I am hardly an objective source for information on Netherweb, but if you are looking for some reviews hostsearch has quite a few: http://www.hostsearch.com/showcommen...ompanycode=846
And if you have any questions about our service contact ben@netherweb.com :-)

Dreamhost seem very stable they host a very popular chat site called chatmeup.com there site is down right now whilst they make adjustments to there chat features. The server seems very fast and does not have much downtime.
Netherweb i sent them an email around 3 weeks ago now im still waiting on an answer i wish they where as quick with emails as they are to answer forumn questions :-P.
I've also used joker.com for a lot of domains there service is very good even if the english is a bit touchy in places bit like mine even though it's my primary language .

I have not heard any bad news about joker.com, but I've registered my own domain @ totalnic.net which is also a discount registration service, and after 1 year I've had no problems at all.

Well what can I say about dreamhost?
I've been with dreamhost for over 2 and a half years.
Their support is okay, they have no phone support citing the huge costs involved in operating a manned support phone line.
We were happy until last Oct or was it sept, 1999, supposedly a hacker, cracker broke into their servers and wiped out most of their servers including all clients websites, operating system, and the backup drive that was attached to the physical servers. We were one of the clients of theirs that got stung hard, we were running a dating website with over 200,000 members. All our members data was stored on our site which was totally and completely deleted. Their next oldest backup tape was about a week old, great I thought, at least we'll only lose a couple thousand members profiles. WRONG! They couldn't recover that tape, they supposedly sent it off to England to a specialist, who would try recover the data. 3 months went by, not a word, until one day they said they managed to recover some of the data after many many many emails from us regarding the matter. The data that they recovered was about 20 members profiles. So it was a total wipe out for us.
During the outage time, all sites on their servers were pointing to a default dreamhost, sorry were down , be back soon page, for about 2 weeks. Nothing we could do, and they refused to answer any support questions during that 2 week period, they left everyone in the dark about the situation.
Well, what did I get for a completely ruined business, one months free hosting, a $35.00 value for a would be growing company making several thousand per month.
So, are we still with dreamhost, yes we are, but only sites that mean nothing to us. We are now on a ded server with a company who shall remain nameless due to their getting bad reviews on this site regardless of the fact that we have 5 business associates that have ded servers with them and have never had a days problem.
Anyway, Dreamhosts servers are up most of the time, though they still have a mysql problem that refuses connections time and time again, and their reply to this is that we are investigating upping something to fix this, this is the same answer that I have gotten time and time again over the last 7 months of using their mysql servers.
So, they host over 10,000 domains or accounts as of their newsletter 3 months ago, so they are a big boy in the hosting field, at least to someone like me who only hosts 50 accounts on our ded server. I suppose if you have an non interactive website, ie. non mysql, then they are okay to go with, and they are improving, in fact I have a friend who went to their headquarters for a tour, and saw the letter I wrote to them about how they put my online personals business out of business and I hope that they keep this in mind, actually hung on the door as you exit the tech building as a constant reminder of the great disaster of 1999.
Regards,
Brainbox.

DreamHost is ranks fair in todays standards, but not much of a value. You may want to check out FutureQuest http://www.futurequest.net
Good luck

I was running at Dreamhost for almost a year until about 5 months or so ago. Speeds were 'fair', uptime was 'ok' but starting to get worse. Support is poor. Phone support never interests me as I'm here in Australia, so good email support is what I need. At best my emails were answered in 24 hours (never before), at worst, it was up to 3 days or so. The answers I got tended to be generic and somewhat 'canned'. The information sources on their site are pretty thin (take a look at the FAQ etc) which you'd think they would have filled out after several years and *cough* 10 000 domains.
If you're fine with a simple site (no frills) then go for them. For the same price, you can easily get better support, and more features, with better uptime and speed.
Oh yeah, my big beef with them is I'm still trying to manhandle a domain out from under their registraion system (getting there slowly)... So if you DO go for them, register elsewhere (I recommend Dotster.com)

Well, after I explained to them that ive been on the net as long as they have and that I dont appreciate getting canned generic responses they started to give me a detailed response covering whatever it was that i needed to know at the time.
If you can't offer courteous fast email response to support then your in the wrong business, or your prices are too low. Some hosts do dual hosting, ded servers and virtual hosting, for those that do both, they are reaping in enough money from their ded servers to give more than adequate support for those that are paying for a cheapo account, if they can't then stop offering that type of account. It's really that simple.
By the way, they have always had the best speeds for me, when I setup a client on a host somewhere I usually attempt to find one that has the least amount of hops to get to the server so it always looks fast for them. Point in case, I have some sites hosted in michigan, for me they are tremendously slow, for my partner in michigan they are really fast, whereas dreamhost for him are slow.
