Colo Providers in Equinix DC3 (Ashburn)
We currently have a rack in Equinix DC3 in Ashburn, and we have a project which will require another half or full rack for the next 6-12 months. We'd like to cross-connect the new servers to our existing servers, and it seems the most cost-effective solution is if we get space in the same datacenter since then there's just a one-time cross-connect setup fee and no monthly free for cross-connect (or at least this is my understanding).
Can anyone recommend providers specifically in DC3? Our current provider is out of space.

You will have a MRC on your xconnect if you do not buy space directly from equinix. Equinix does not sell half cabs IIRC anymore and the only space they are currently selling is the new DC6 building. DC3 might have lots of space, but they have no power left in the building.

Equinix space and cross connects are both very expensive. A 20A cabinet at LA1 with one cross connect was running around $1800.00.
We use TelX primarily, it's a very cost effective carrier neutral DC.

I find Telehouse to be much more cost effective than Telx or Equinix especially with cross connections and power.

TelX right now is *very* aggressive, seeing quotes up to 1/2 that of telehouse.

It will be more cost-effective to get your own full cabinet(s) in the long run. You can not cross-connect from 'your' cabinet located in someone elses cage to 'your' cabinet in a different provider for free. As far as Equinix is concerned that is an inter-customer connect and they will charge around $300 MRC for it.
Or, encourage your existing provider to get more space. BTW, it is a RED flag if they say that they cant!!

Thanks for the information. Our provider says we can cross-connect from our current cabinet (which is actually their cabinet, i.e. we are a customer of the provider, and they are a customer of Equinix) to servers they have in their other cabinets in DC3 for a $500 one-time setup fee and no monthly. So based on your information, it's a different cost if it's between providers?

Why is this a red flag? They say they can get us space in other Equinix datacenters in Ashburn, but they simply are out of space in DC3 and Equinix has nothing more to offer in DC3. Is that simply not true? I haven't been in DC3 in a while but it seemed quite full when I last walked through 6 months ago.

If you get a cross connect to yourself, i.e your provider to your provider its a one time setup. If your provider connects to any other account inside equinix then there is a monthly fee assicated with that. Equinix in ashburn is currently 225 for copper, 325 for fiber with a 500 setup and a 250 disconnect fee.

DC3 is out of power, no one can get power. Sure you can get a cabinet, but you wont get power. Even if power becomes available with the much larger customers in DC3 the power goes to them first. I.e vonage is in that DC and a bunch of other big hitters.

You make absolutely no sense saying this is a big flag if someone cannot get space. Are you in the ashburn market or have any idea of the inventory levels of any/all the buildings in the campus? Are you a customer in DC3?

Also, if your looking to move out of Equinix, Coresite Reston Exchange is a great alternative location for space. Switch & Data use to be until they became equinix.

Are you a customer in DC3?
|
I didnt say anything about expanding in DC3, I said expand. As you are aware, they can expand in any of the campus data centers.
To answer your question, we have had a cabinet in DC1 for 8 years, and in Chilum Place for 4 years.

i've heard some other comments similar to this, has equinix "ruined" this site somehow?

They didn't ruin it, they just have some very large, power hungry customers in there that will pay premiums for power.
