Can you provider us some more details like:
-Is there a (D)DoS on your server?. If yes what kind of (D)DoS?
-What OS are you using?

You should contact your VPS provider about DDOS protection. Software firewalls only help to a certain extend and are not really useful in my opinion. You may achieve more protection if you ask your provider to install an hardware firewall etc.

How are you sure it's a DOS attempt instead of just regular DNS traffic?

You can use ConfigServer Security & Firewall.
Get it from here: www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html

Hi,

If you want to prevent your server from DDos attack then you will either have to

- Install a hardware firewall- It is a bit expensive
- Install anti-DDos software: combination of mod_evasive+mod_deflate+ CSF firewall.

There are a lot of ways to prevent the server from such as using firewall. it is a low cost and probably free method is by using software based firewall or filtering service.

(D)DoS-Deflate is a open source for Unix/Linux script by MediaLayer free that automatically mitigate (D)DoS attacks.

If you take advantage of the CT_LIMIT function in CSF, then your VPS should be fine against (D)DoS attacks
