What are your recommendations for webhosts that charge a reasonable amount on a per year basis? I was looking for something around the $20/year range.

$20 a year for what features? What kind of space and bandwidth? If you're looking for that low a price, something somewhere is going to reflect it: iffy service, not too many features, not much flexibility. Be careful in making your choice.

Well, anything that is at least 100mb, 1gb at least, php and mysql, along with no ads. Anything more would be appreciated, but not necessary?

if this is a personal site, you may want to just consider a free site somewhere. if it is for a business, you should invest a few more bucks each month and get something reliable and with good customer service.

If someone is making less than $2/mo from each client before any bills, you certainly can't expect them to be able to devote any time to do things like support you, or even keep the server up.

To answer your question more completely, I would check out people like Alan at http://splashhost.com and do some searches at the top of the forum, this question is asked a LOT. Then go to the request forum with your specific requirements and post your requirements and then research everyone that pops up an answer, keeping the notes above in mind.

Often if you pay yearly your get a discount. Month free or something.

Here's a list of reputable ones. Some charge almost doubt the $20/yr you mentioned on their minimum plans but it should be worth it.

Very small profit margin, indeed?

Maybe they sell other services that make up the cost.

if they are offering the $1.66 account and make up the rest by offering other services, then any viable business would be set up to have the $1.66 accounts to either drift into more profitable accounts or to purchase the other services. There may be hosts that offer these accounts and have set things up that would coax most people into higher accounts (like only offering 1 email address or no cgi-bin, etc) that you could find that have conditions that you could live with. If the $1.66 account were the mainstay of their business, or they have no mechanism to have people move up to offerings with more margin, then their business model is most likely flawed.

$20/year reasonable? I must be in another industry. I thought we were selling web space and not bubble game. I spend more than $20/year on gum, easily.

Seriously, on a low-budget account I wouldn't want to get tied into a year contract. Odds are a company like that won't be around very long.

Well the reason i want to pay yearly is because if i have the money to pay for all of it now, i want to pay it and not have to worry for another year, no worrying about making those monthly payments. Or I may not have the money to pay for the webhosting a month (money goes fast here ) and like i said before, if i have all the money currently, then i could pay it all at once and not have to worry about not having enough to pay for the next month. Sorry if that seemed confusing, but I tried my best to clarify. At the moment I have a very small budget and cannot afford to spend much on webhosting, but it would still be very nice.

Having a very small budget is no crime - it happens from time to time. Some hosting companies will offer a good discount if you pay yearly.

However, if your budget is truly so tightstretched, you might want to check into free hosting alternatives. They wouldn't have nearly as many features as you want, but just as with everything in life, you have to make some compromises.

Good luck - companies stopped offering so many free services on the Internet when the dot-combustion hit.

I don't know if I would do yearly just because I have paid yearly once and got booted off for no good reason

so watch out , pick a good host with a nice reputation and don't always go for the cheapest and good luck

www.dixiesys.com offers a 19.99/year package.

I think its 40megs, 1.5gb transfer and 5 emails (i know because I have it)... There is no real con's about this... It has all the features you're looking for .. 5 mysql DB's, cgi-bin, php4... the works.

Actually, one downside is the support. If you don't need true 24/7 support, you're fine. They are online 24/7, but I never seem to get a response in the late hours.

It is worth 1.66/mo though - And they're most likely going to be around for awhile. ... Except you need to sign up before December, because their prices are getting a major hike for new signups.
