Installing CentOS and cPanel...
Hello,
I'm just wondering if installing CentOS 5 and cPanel on a dedicated server would actually take more than 8 hours. Does it take actually take that long to install them?
Basically, if your host/server provider/technician said that it took them 8 hours to install them, would you consider that as "normal"?
Just wondering...
Thanks.

From start to finish it should take no more then 2 hours. Of course that will vary with the hardware and connection speed.

So, 8 hours seems "irregular" to you?
Yeah, 2 hours is the time I would expect...

If everything is properly configured, 2 hours should do it. Some servers are being reinstalled and sometimes they have a Reverse DNS entry that does not resolve. When that happens, the web server mirror offering the downloads for the OS installation and Cpanel Installation may attempt to resolve that entry and hold the download until it can resolve it or it times out. When that happens, the installation takes forever (may be about 8 hours).

I have seen it taking more than that due to bandwidth limitations or slow mirrors (sometimes it happens).
Also it may have taken all that time for them not to install it, but to obtain the license. Some license resellers take some time between the payment and the license releasing.

If you already have the license, you can setup it with a fast server and connection speed in less than an hour... But, it also depends on the servers the "stuff" is downloaded from.

Most cpanel resellers have instant activation so there should be no hold up there.

Ya but hold up there.
You didn't say if the server hardware is allocated, racked or part of a build team. We have no information to gauge if it is normal or not. If it's ONLY Centos and ONLY Cpanel on modern hardware (ie not an old Pentium III with 512mb) then ya 8 hours is a long time.
Maybe they confirm / harden the server after config. It just doesn't seem like a question that you can answer easily.

Okay, 4 hours+ just to install CentOS on a quad-core server?
ONLY to install CentOS - I'm not talking about cPanel yet...

It is possible if it's being done via netinstall using a slow mirror; or if the media is being mounted via remote KVM over IP (Virtual Media) and the connection is also crappy.

Using a mirror close to the server, a net install of centos takes me about 20 mins, thats knowing in advance what install options I want so not taking time to read through all the options.

That's a possibility...

Even if you have to go through all the options, I don't think it will take anywhere more than 2 hours, won't it?

Is this a new server? There are lots of reasons why it might take more than 1-2 hours, for instance, busy day at the NOC. If your deployment isnt automatied and its a one person on staff shop, a busy day can hold up a build/install for a while. Sometimes you have to diagnose fault hardware or other things, sometimes an issue is out of a technicians hands. Without context one can only really say "8 hours is a long time if all that needs to be done is install OS/cpanel on a server that is otherwise already provisioned".

It should not took longer than 4 hours. However, 8 hours is normal if you may experience some technical difficulties.
