Any experience with Hostgator VPS?

I have a shared hosting account with Hostgator and I do not discount the possibility that one day my sites will grow so big I would need a VPS. But I want to know first whether HG's VPS is any good. Thanks.

There's no review in that thread. Thanks though.

judging by their shared hosting image they might be OK. Plus they are among the few who tell you [trough their HELP or ? options on h] what web site is suitable with what VPS - in other words - what a VPS can and can't accomodate.

Yes, we had a server at ThePlanet for about $160/month and were looking for something cheaper. Went for a Level 3 VPS account with Hostgator, about $49/month. Ran some basic unix benchmarks and the performance was comparable.

They use a "Virtuozzo" control panel. I got the impression a lot of their tech support wasn't that familiar with it. The real show stopper was memory problems. We were running Apache/PHP/MySQL and when we added some Python stuff for Mailman, got memory faults -- which I thought they would have some swap capability.

The VM Hostgator uses does not support any type of swap, or burst access. I learned that from other postings. Their are VMs that do allow it. So..... if you can live in limited memory you should be fine!

Oh so, Hostgator is not a better option for me. I am currently hosted with Knownhost but lately I just don't understand that cpu load average is very high even if no one visits my one forum site. Hostgator is canceled from my mind. I am still looking for reviews about wiredtree.

I've got a US VPS with KnownHost and I don't have that problem. It just runs like a well oiled machine....nothing fluctuates to any degree.

My UK VPS is with FutureHosting and is pretty much the same as well....so you could check them out too if you're making a list of possibilities.

@zionchild : Have you reported that issue to KnownHost support team? just curious if they could find something or any issue related with it, and maybe they could fix it?

Hostgator reminds me of an old spyware program called gator... Bad marketing strategy.
