Worst "Really Such a Word"

Hello,

When I was growing up and when I was at school I admit I used the word "Worst", I always got into strife about it as I was always told there is not such word as "Worst" but to rephrase it to "Worse".

I can see it is on Google as a definition

Am I being decieved here?

Thanks

Sean

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/worst

Funner is my guilty "not a real word" to use.

Exactly the same page I browsed too and was very curious as to whether it is a word - or it could be local to one region, I have no idea but if true I feel taken advantage of.

Teachers, Parents, Friends - It is not a word apparently in the Australian World!
- We have always been taught that Worst is not a word, though, Worse it the correct terminology.

I can't help but wonder if that isn't some Aussie thing, as the word "worst" has existed for me as long as I can remember.
Worst: the opposite of best.
Worse: a condition that has degraded somehow.

^^ too slow, same conclusion while I was writing something else.

I have been deprived of using the word, I never used it in any exams, I never used it as a word in sentences in speeches or anything - It would seem that I was deprived of the word because of the fact I was told it was irrelevant, not a word, wrongly spelt and NOT A WORD!

Wow had to get that off my chest

I still think it is a poor word.

Factually Speaking

Worse is an adjective that is a simple word that has no past present or tense...

I cite the Dictionary of Yardley LOL

Quote:
Comparative and Superlatives for Beginners
Beginning Grammar

We use the comparative and superlative form to compare and contrast different objects in English. Use the comparative form to show the difference between two objects. Example: New York is more exciting than Seattle. Use the superlative form when speaking about three or more objects to show which object is 'the most' of something. Example: New York is the most exciting city in the USA.

Here is a chart showing how to construct the comparative form in English. Notice in the example sentences that we use 'than' to compare the two objects:

One Syllable Adjectives

place 'more' before the adjective

Example: interesting - more interesting / difficult - more difficult

Example Sentences

London is more expensive than Madrid.
This test is more difficult than the last test.

Here is a chart showing how to construct the superlative form in English:

One Syllable Adjectives

place 'the' before the adjective and add '-est' to end of the adjective (Note: double the final consonant if preceded by a vowel)

Example: cheap - the cheapest / hot - the hottest / high - the highest

Example Sentences

Today is the hottest day of the summer.
This book is the cheapest I can find.

Two, Three or More Syllable Adjectives

place 'the most' before the adjective

Example: interesting - the most interesting / difficult - the most difficult

Example Sentences

London is the most expensive city in England.
That is the most beautiful painting here.

Two Syllable Adjectives Ending in '-y' place 'the' before the adjective and remove the 'y' from the adjective and add 'iest'

Example: happy - the happiest / funny - the funniest

Example Sentences

New York is the noisiest city in the USA.
He is the most important person I know.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTIONS

There are some important exceptions to these rules. Here are two of the most important exceptions:

good

* good - adjective
* better - comparative
* the best - superlative

Example Sentences

This book is better than that one.
This is the best school in the city.

bad

* bad - adjective
* worse - comparative
* the worst - superlative

Example Sentences

His French is worse than mine.
This is the worst day of my life.

Main Entry: worse
Pronunciation: \wrs\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English werse, worse, from Old English wiersa, wyrsa; akin to Old High German wirsiro worse
Date: before 12th century
comparative of bad or of ill

1 : of more inferior quality, value, or condition
2 a : more unfavorable, difficult, unpleasant, or painful b : more faulty, unsuitable, or incorrect c : less skillful or efficient
3 : bad, evil, or corrupt in a greater degree : more reprehensible
4 : being in poorer health : sicker
This makes the word WORST a word by the action of a superlative.

Every year couple of new words are added to the English dictionary. Maybe the word WORST didn't exist when you were a student and it was added later. Well "Jaiho" was also not a word either, but it now .

I believe you have a point, Phishing was never apart of the dictionary as I believe it is now
