Has anybody heard about PS3 based game servers?

My question is - has anybody heard about putting SONY PS3 into a data center and running 24 hours 7 days a game server on it. Something like Resistance 2?

I would love to try this, altought the PS3 must be in really good cooling if not it may melt. I havn't had a problem with my PS3 other than leaving it on for about 2 days in a row and it becoming a heater. My PS3 Phat is a heater when I leave it on for a while.

How would you go about doing this? Would you install Lunix on it or what??

The military has tried something on the lines of using the PS3 as part of a computing network (I can't link because I don't have 5 posts, but googling air force ps3 it's the first result). If you could cool the units down enough, and get the game server app to run on it's architecture (most game servers are, from my understanding, written for an x86 or x64 architecture), itd be very good for the price.

Considering what the PS3 was intended for, it would be ill advised anyways to use them as a gaming server but anything is possible. Just a matter of cooling and power consumptiona and I am sure performance would be horrendous.

I may be misinformed on this, but isn't PS3 working under linux-like operating system, with just a user interface on it?

The OS doesn't matter when the hardware isn't built to PC spec let alone server spec.

Even with the horrendous cooling and power costs the units would eat themselves within a week. If you pulled the components out of the casing, built a custom rack for them and had techs to re-solder the cold joints you might get two weeks.

The OS changing thing on the ps3 got yanked in a recent update. I imagine this would be "possible" but probably not worth the time or effort to get it working correctly.

Yes,
It's been done... Specifically Warhawk (PS3 title). Sony opted to host it on the PS3 platform.

You can see it here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/...rhawk-servers/

Official Sony Playstation blog.

Yellow Dog Linux also supports the PS3: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/su...are/sony.shtml

NetBSD likely has a version lol NetBSD runs on everything!

is it possible to make computing network based on GPU , example Radeon 5770 shows 1Tflop throughput but not sure how to make use of it as a super computer, if works , it is good for developing countries / Students as a perfect to own super computer as they do not have much funds to buy such fancy stuff
