    Monitoring Software Recommendations

I have been looking at getting a different monitoring software for our infrastructure. We are currently using GroundWorks Open Source, and while it works fine, it is a pain in the butt to add more servers and custom set individual services and thresholds.

For instance, we may want a high process count on a server to 100 process and on a different server that critical alert be 1000. It makes it very hard to tweak each individual server/service.

I wanted to find out if anyone has any recommendations on what to use.

We are open to opensource as well as anything we that is commercial. We just want a solution that is web based.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

For Linux based servers I recommend Nagios. Version 3 has a new modular design which is a big improvement.

The interface is web based but the configuration needs to be done in config files.

I have been using Zabbix for a while. It is really a nice system once you get your templates setup the way you need them and thresholds finely tuned.

I have installed nagios some time back. But can't get it configured. Was thinking of trying cati. How you compare nagios to Cacti ? Which is easy to configure ?

Cacti gives decent graphs related to BW monitoring. Basic configuration of nagios is easy. Adding custom services, needs custom adding configurations and adding/developing plugins to the nagios.

I would recommend Nagios and cacti. Both has decent web based interface and real time alert features.

    Hi,

Nagios gets our vote too. And it is free and configurable.

Nagios has the widest level of implementation.

Another option for research is zenoss.

We recommend Nagios and opsview. Configuration is bit hard but these tools are very reliable.

If you are interested in: cpu, ram, disk space, bandwidth, eth info (errors, pps, etc) then you should go with cacti, it's the easiest to install and configure.

Nagios wins when it comes to services monitoring.

    Worth researching: monit and munin

Does anyone have any suggestions on nagios front-ends, eg centreon?
