Checking the stats of a web host
OK I've got my hands on the IP of my potential web-host(I asked him for a website hosted on the servers but he gave me an IP instead citing privacy policy....which is a good thing I guess)
So what do I do with this IP? How do I find out the uptime, speed, etc of the host? Any tools?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but.....
The guys are relatively new to the scene but the support was nice so I might consider them.

Well, theres no way to tell unless he's been signed up to a monitoring service i think. The only other real thing you can do with the IP is to test its speed. Start -> Run -> "CMD" -> type "ping *IP*" and see how fast your PC / internet connection pings packects/data.

right thanks....now I'll have to run VMware.
UPDATE:
OK I did a ping but I still can't figure out anything.
Quote:
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 343.518/344.474/346.377/0.863 ms
|
So is it trying to tell me that the speed is only 185.7 byte/sec. If so then I'm staying away from them!

Ping does not really give you the information you are looking for
on this site domaintools.com there is a feature that looks for all sites hosted on a specific ip, or with a specific domain then finds the ip and looks that way.
I cant remember where on the site it is but it is there somewhere and its free.

If you can find out the nameservers they use, you can get a guestimate/rough guide to the number of GTLD domains they host using something like webhosting.info or hosterstats.com. This can give you a good idea of the relative size of the hosting company.

But this information is about number of hosted domain names not about hosted web site.
I guess they are different things.

You might want to contact the host to see if they have any speed test files available for you to test their connection. An IP is mainly for ping and tracert purposes.

I'll be happier if they had a decent user base wouldn't I.
Thanks for all the help.

I did. But the file was only 4MB. I mentioned a 50-100MB file but the guy came back with a 4 MB file.

You could request him to increase the file size so you can do a thorough test. It makes no sense to have such a small file for users to test the connection, the lowest I have ever seen was 10MB.

Well you might sleep better, on the assumption that they are an established stable company, but a big company may or may not give the best service, so you may or may not be happier.

Go to http://network-tools.com/ and made an express checking of the IP.
You will receive all the available info about hoster, nameservers, DNS record, ISP, etc...
Test speed to IP which was provided you exactly for testing purposes is useless)) because speed first of all depends on website which is placed in that IP.
You can test connection speed to this IP from all over the world using the services like http://host-tracker.com/
