Want to build my own computer...

I know how to do it.. I'm just fighting myself on what parts I should buy. I want a beast of a computer, and I want to do it under 2 grand. I have a 24" iMac and would love to have a PC in the house that compliments it.

What would you guys suggest as "must-buy" parts?

I'd prefer to make it a Mac if at all possible.. And mostly Photoshop, but I'd like to be able to play games if and when I wanted to. I am a fan of Intel and no preference on video cards.

As far as I am aware you are not allowed to put macs on normal computers, you have to order a pre made mac... Although it does not mean you have to.

I have to finish configuring a server so I wont be able to provide you with links (out of time) but typing these into newegg.com should yield some results.

    Intel i7 920
    ati xfx 5970 $330
    Asus Rampage III Gene
    Crucial C300 128GB 6GBs $300
    Corsair Dominator 6GB 1600 $165
    Cooler Master HAF x Case

Ok I lied... finished early heres the links. If you want to put in more money then is needed let me know and I will get better parts. The 5970 is the best video card on the market.

CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115225 the 920 is not listed there but the 930 is slightly better.

A great cooling heatsink for overclocking ( Note that even the best cpu's on the market benefit in frame rate by overclocking. Although not needed): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-018-_-Product
    case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-225-_-Product

    motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0Rampage%20III

    ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224

    powersupply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006

Hard drive, now I prefer having a secondary hard drive like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284 to store files and having a ssd just made for booting up your computer and photoshop or your most played games. For example this ssd as your boot drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-510-_-Product

And with a nice rig I am a fan of surge protectors http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16842102070

Maybe a 1tb external hd for backups also.

I'm buying some parts in a few months, specifically Core i7 930, ATI Radeon HD 5850, and 6GB of DDR3 RAM

Getting it relatively cheap here (it's a pack of parts, I just mentioned those!); $1400. :-)

Am not sure to be honest however when they are i7's will decrease more in price, the i9 will boast 6 cores instead of 4...

However if you like the sound of 6cores you could go down the AMD hex core route which will give you more bang for your buck...

Okay. What is your opinion on AMD vs. Intel? I've always used Intel, and I have a bias against AMD since they power Acer and e-Machines, which I hate with a passion.

AMD have signed an argeement with intel over the last few months which will let AMD take their products into a more range of machines...

intel basicly had all the contracts with the manufactures.

acer and emachines also use intel...

price vs performance AMD wins to be honest...

Thank you very much for your help. Another question while you are here -- ATI or G-Force?

Okay, well thank you anyway for your help. Do you know anything about hard drives? I'm considering using VelociRaptor just because of 10 000 RPMs.

If your budget can be reach i,d take alook into a solid state drive to be honest...

Corsair and kingston do some good solid states at the moment...

    however the velociraptors are good...

Or you have the hybrid by seagate, half sata half ssd: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/pro...ops/laptop-hdd

What's the point of a Solid State Drive? I'm sort of confused (with my research of it).

They seem so small it's like you need to purchase 20 of them to have a decent hard drive.

no platters to get damaged, less heat etc...

their based upon the technology of memory cards...

you could put your OS on an solid state then your content on the raptor

for the time being I'm looking this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233122 for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and then putting my files on a 600GB VelociRaptor HD.

Get a SSD Solid State Drive, they are about 200 times faster than conventional hard disk drives and are much less likely to fail.

Hence why I'm putting the OS on the SSD.
