Correct email (exim) server setup

Greetings,

I was unable to find a decent tutorial to setup the following:
-Domain Keys
- DKIM
- SPF records

So I wonder does anybody know any good (VERIFIED - i.e. you tested it) tutorials to setup these three?

Best Regards,
Merlin

Are you using a control panel or no?

If you are using cPanel you can set it up via "Email Authentication" in the cPanel of the particular account.

Are you sending emails only through the server on where the domain is hosted? if yes, leaving the default setting for the SPF records of cpanel should be OK; for the Key you don't have to do anything indeed.

Ha? I don't think that's a step to step guide. And sorry SPF is NOT installed by default neither is DKIM or Domain Keys. I was asking how can I set it up in cPanel/WHM...

Thanks for the try ... anyway

Yes is it, but you have to set it on each cpanel for each domain.

As I said... click on "Email Authentication" in the cPanel for the particular account. I already answered your question - do give it a shot.

I don't want to set it up for each account. I want to set it up for the whole server. There must be a way to set it up for the whole server.

I don't know that there is any way to set a default (i.e. where cPanel configures them automatically). I checked Exim Configuration as well as Tweak Settings and I don't see anything related to it.

You'll either have to do it in each account (only takes a few moments per account) or have the account holders (if it's not you) set it up if they complain I suppose.

I see.
Hmm well, I guess that's fine as long as I don't forget to activate it .

Now I have Domain Keys and SPF installed. What about DKIM? Yahoo will continue send my mail to spam if I don't have DKIM installed.

Doesn't look like cPanel supports DKIM ... and that thread is fairly old too.. May want to try bumping it.

No they won't send mail to spam solely for not having DKIM enabled. If a message fails DKIM it is likely to go to spam but FAIL is not the same as not having DKIM at all. On most systems, passing a DKIM test will be points in a message's favor, so if there are other factors causing it to get tagged, DKIM would help. Last I knew Yahoo uses DomainKeys, which they own, and not DKIM which is a similar standard, so if it's just Yahoo you are worried about.

Send a message from an account you have SPF and DomainKeys installed on, to
check-auth2 at verifier.port25.com. In a few minutes, you should get a reply analyzing the following:
  • SPF check
  • DomainKeys check
  • DKIM check
  • Sender-ID check
  • Spam Assassin check
You may find that when you set up DomainKey it takes care of DKIM as well

Domain Keys Set Up
Execute the command :- /usr/local/cpanel/bin/domain_keys_installer username
This will install Domain Key for the respective domain (For Eg:- test.com). You can verify it from the db record for the domain /var/named/test.com.db.

1. rndc reload test.com
2. Restart exim service.

Please try to create an email account under the domain “test.com” and send an email to yahoo account, then verify the headers.
