Windows Update not working...
On a clean install of Windows Server 2003 Standard 32 bit, Windows Update in addition to any other Microsoft website or webservice doesn't load for me. It can't be a virus or something similar since it doesn't work right after I install Windows, and my host said other VPS on the same node aren't having this problem. My license is valid but I can't activate it since, surprise, it can't connect to any Microsoft service. This happens randomly to other websites, too. Some load well and some don't. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this only happening with Microsoft related websites?

Yes and no. It happens all the time with Microsoft related sites, but it happens with some other random sites. The difference is, at those other random sites once I refresh enough it works.
I forgot to mention that this happens in both IE and Chrome, so I don't think it's a browser problem either.

Windows Update never works for me. Try http://it.shavlik.com instead.

What virtualisation platform are you using? Quite often Parallels will try to block you from using windows update as it claims to take care of it on its own.

It doesn't fix Windows Update -- its an alternative solution to it (plus it patches way more than WU does).
EDIT: I use their "Protect" software to manage patching the domain at work. There is a free trial on their site, but it is only good for about 1 month. The website solution I posted is free unless you want to report on more than 25 boxes.Last edited by JoshZZ; 04-17-2010 at 06:54 PM.

Thanks, I'll probably use that if I can't get WU to work. I'd really like to fix this problem or at least know what's causing it.

Anything in %windir%\windowsupdate.log ?
If you have to operate your company behind the scenes or under a fake name, maybe it's time to leave the industry and start something fresh.

Check all firewalls and see if there happens to be a blanket block on all microsoft sites.

I just turned off the firewall for a short period to see if it made a difference, and it didn't.

I would not advise to turn off the Windows firewall - it should be pre-configured for the updates.
What I would advise is to perform off-line virus scan if you have such option and/or change the installation media.

I turned off the firewall for less than a minute just to see if I could connect to microsoft.com and I turned it back on right after.
Like I said, I don't think it's a virus because this is a new install of Windows unless my version of Windows ships with a virus.

Reload the os, we have faced similar issue with newly built vps and ensure that you update the os asap or you find yourself in the same situation again.

I installed Windows XP on the same VPS and I didn't have this problem, so my guess is there's something wrong with the initial configuration of Windows Server 2003.
