It's awful. A friend of mine's wife is due on a flight tomorrow morning from New York to Manchester and it's not looking likely for the flight to go ahead right now.
I heard stories today that some pilots, just weren't having any of it and taking the risk. One Canadian pilot flying to Belfast was told to go elsewhere - where, back to Canada? Were his exact words and he refused to turn around and they had no choice but to follow landing procedures with him.
It's crazy.

Is Scotland not in the UK Airspace now then ?
All pilots are being told to fly under 5,000ft under VFR flight conditions so obviously airliners can't do that and are therefore cancelled.
Should be ok from tomorrow onwards.

Remember seeing a National Geographic episode of British Airways flying over ash clouds in Indonesia, all four engines shut down, luckily they could revive it back.

Yeah, I heard about that. Apparently that flight is one of the reasons that they are even stricter about it now.

Nope, all flights have been cancelled till Sunday. So far, there could be a longer period.
I'm stuck here for another few days....

Wrong!
NATS is allowing some planes from Scotland, going to Ireland and the States, to fly, but this is on a case by case basis, until 7pm. The rest of UK airspace is closed until 1am Saturday at the earliest, apart from the Air Ambulance, Police and Coast Guard helecopters.
At 6pm NATS will announce if there is to be a new extension to the closure of UK airspace, but they say this is currently looking likely, they will also announce when they can fully reopen Scottish airspace, or if the current rules are to be extended.

That's a huge disruption world wide with passengers stranded everywhere. Some French schoolgirls who are in Australia for an excursion are very happy though that they get to stay here a few more days

Yeah, I've got a few of my staff stuck in Capetown, SA right now... they're really looking forward to getting home.
