uptime monitoring

I need to know the uptime of a site. Also, before choosing a hosting I would like to know its uptime too. Is there any way of checking ite independently?

I personally recommend HyperSpin (http://www.hyperspin.com/en/) for monitoring a site's uptime. They have a free (trial?) version I believe.

As for your other question, HyperSpin has a public list of hosts who use their services (or are monitored by their services) at:

http://www.hyperspin.com/en/ranking.php?type=1

You can also try asking a potential host for their uptime stats. I assume all hosts monitor their server's uptimes.

Some hosts do provide third party monitors of their website's uptime publicly, so that might be useful. Another way to go about doing this is to read users' review of their services - since they have experience of their services personally and would know how their uptime is like as well. Otherwise, you can always sign up for a hosting account with the host first, then use a third party monitor to check the uptime of your website (preferably every 5-10 minutes or so) and review it over a month - most hosts do offer a money back guarantee period so you can take advantage of it to review their service in that period.

Find a hosting provider that interests you and ask if they have any third party uptime monitoring reports - most will be able to link you to some sort of service like hyperspin that is monitoring their uptime

It would be great if you can get honest reviews from other users that have been using that host provider for some time, so that they will tell you the real "uptime" they have experienced so far.

Another good 3rd party monitoring service is Pingdom.

You should also remember that the uptime of the host's own site, may or may not have any bearing on the uptime that users experience.

Well, yes, but I'm not talking about host's site. I was thinking about creating a simple test web page on my disk space and monitor it with host-tracker.com or one of the services, listed above.

I was recently shown BinaryCanary.com which looks nice... They can also optionally call you when a site/server is down which is a nice touch... This is generally for your own site.

As far as uptime history for prospective hosts - you'll have to ask them. Some of them can link you to third parties with the information, some can provide you with internal data, and then some simply don't keep that sort of data in a format that you could view.

Second, even though WebHostingStuff's monitoring only probes every 30 minutes or so it's somewhat reliable. As someone said earlier, a hosts uptime does differ from their client servers.

As far as NetCraft, only the hosts who pay to be monitored are listed there...
