iPhone OS 4 - MultiTasking and iAd
Hi,
Just found that Multitasking is finally coming to the iPhone.
Apple recently hosted a OS4 preview and they have introduced another 100 new features including iAd.
Do you guys think iAd will revolutionize the Mobile Advertising industry and is Apple getting Personal with google as its clearly seen, that they are getting into the Advertisement Market now.
Regards,
Alons

Apple thinks that for mobile market, people tend to use the apps more than the browser, and hence they think iAd is going to work.
A user of NYtimes, would they prefer surfing mobile NYtimes on a mobile browser, or use NYtimes apps for iPhone?
iAd success would also rely on Apple maintaining their market share.

With the NYT app of course because it's custom built for the iPhone and is heaps more user friendly. I access the NYT app at least once a day. The same with the Huffington Post app and the same for all my news apps. I would never access the NYT or Huffpost website on the iPhone, as their apps are designed to be viewed on the smaller phone screens, whereas the Huffpost and NYT websites were designed for PC screens.

Not sure if their mobile ads platform will "revolutionize the Mobile Advertising industry", but they will try and build an advertising platform, connecting advertisers to content creators.
App developers are already developing free apps and sourcing ad revenue from those apps. What Apple are doing here is building the platform that allows an app developer to tap into Apple's advertisers, and Apple making 40% in the process for managing the iAds platform.
Look at Google's ad model and where they make 99% of their money. They match content to ads with their adwords program. Apple sees their free apps as content and is building the platform whereby app developers can display targeted ads from a list of advertisers that Apple have bought into their iAds platform. So instead of the free app developer having to get his own ads for the free app, Apple will supply the advertisers, and charge a commission for doing so.
So Apple are leveraging off their free app store content in the form of free apps, matching advertisers to relevant apps, thus opening up another stream of revenue in the process.

I wonder what the network carriers make of this?
I have Skype on my iPhone, and although it's a great bit of kit, it's limited in that I only show as online when the appplication is running.
I'm looking forward to it anyway

Depending on the app, not much more bandwidth may be consumed, especially if the app is just sending keepalive-style signals every so often.

and you can bet Apple's not happy about that. They want their cut, and rightfully so.
Personally, I look for them to reject apps based on the fact that it's not using iAd, but something else. Apple controls the content, they control the ads, they get the profit. Pretty simple strategy there.

Yea, that's the first step for devs to move onto the Android market.
Sooner or later, a lot of devs will be sick of the Apple's big brother and censoring. And with the android OS platform explosion (phones, PMP, MID), the android share will only get better. Unlike the single platform iphone/ipad.

I can't see Apple forcing all current free apps to only use their iAds platform for ad serving, if they're using another ad serving platform. Maybe for new apps, they would, but not for existing free apps. But with Apple you never know.

We'll see, Bob.
I hope you're right, but something tells me this is how it's going to be. I can (honestly) see Apple/Jobs claiming they're doing this for the "benefit of the app community", as they'll censor ads. They'll take their cut, and give publishers there, but I dunno.
I hope I'm wrong, because this could be a bad thing, but we'll see. I don't see how else it's going to work though, honestly.

I believe multitasking will only be available for 3Gs users, as any models below 3Gs can't support it well enough.

I also heard 1st gen iPhones won't be updated anymore, so they won't get the OS 4 update. Speculation or actual fact, I have no idea.
