Question

Should a company register all TLDs or a waste?

When a company website is being developed and launched, and the general TLD's are available, is it a good idea to grab them all, or would this just be a waste of money? And why.

The .com was acquired, .net/org/biz/info/us are available. Name is available too but I think that is strictly for individuals.

Appreciate advice on this, thanks in advance!

Generally, we advice our clients to acquire at least .com/net and their country ccTLD.

For sure grab the .net , we also for our needs sometimes grab the .org for more internal use. The .biz .info and .us , well that is up to you... Perhaps it may depend also on the business and how paranoid the owner of the business may be that someone would start another company that sells the same product under your domain .biz .us etc... but that in most case's does not happen ... (but domains are cheap when you compare to marketing dollars) , we have clients that buy all the domain TLD's for their new venture )... Most people will remember you by the .com

com/net/org/cctld is all you need.
If you're in the usa or canada maybe grab .us.

Agreed. Of course, get the domain names in your country as well.

if its a trademark its good to grab all names and protect your trademark. this will save you money on lawyers later
if you don't want people to make money from your brand once its popular, then its good to grab names too.

Thanks for the helpful responses.

From what I gathered, the greatest risk is other people registering the same name on different extensions and running their own business, and then having to deal with trademark lawyers/etc. It's probably worth spending the extra $100 or whatever a year.

Also out of curiosity, if someone registers the same name on a foreign extension like .co.uk or .se etc, could they outrank .com, or .com will always be the top?

As a professional domainer, I recommend the following. Register the .com / .net / .org / . ccTLD of your company. If you have your company name registered as a trademark anybody who tries to sit on any other varation of the domain will be required to hand over the domain to you or you have the legal right to pursue damages.

Domains now go for about $8, so figure that you register 5 extensions, thats only $40 /yr. Its a minimal business expense IMO.

google takes into consideration geographical location of the server where your domain is hosted and I am pretty sure .tld too. the same domain with different TLDs will have different ranking in diff. countries . Say, a co.uk will have better ranking in United Kingdom while .us - in the United States.

Also take into consideration how big your company is.
Google is massive, and thus needs to and can also afford to get EVERY extension in existence.
As a global entity with lots of power they have a need for every extension.
Your company, which is probably not a globally known entity, wouldn't need this.

It depends a lot on where your business is focused, so if you have users in vietnam or japan, make sure to get .jp etc. But if you don't have any users in japan, and most of them comes from the us and europe, get com/net/org/european cctld.

Com/net/org/cctld is ALWAYS a must though.
