What can i realistically run on 2 x Intel Xeon 5420 QC 2.5 Ghz

I just purchased this server and I'm real curious what this bad boy can handle. The specs are as follows:

* Dual Intel Xeon 5420 QC 2.5 Ghz
* 4 GB Ram
* 250 GB HD
* 100mbps port

The website claims over 400 slots but I can't see how. The plans are to run 5 private 12 slot servers running 500fps/100 tick. The rest of the server would be pub servers in various games like tf2/bc2/bf series and games like that. Just trying to see what I can max out with what I have.

You need 8GB of memory at least to think about 400 slots. 12GB seems like the sweet spot for game server providers with those CPUs.

With 8GB of ram then you'd be ready for 400 slots. With 4, your looking into about half of that witch is 200 slots. The server its self is nice.

Its also worth noting that you will not be able to run BC2 - there will not be any unranked game files available from what I understand.

If you want a dedicated server with BC2 you should check out Hypernia. They offer a way to give you full RDP + Ranked Games.

Highly recommend to have 1 GBPS connection to increase the quality.

Theres no point to having 1 gbps if the server isn't using 100 mbps and your never going to be using 100 mbps with that server.

It doesn't increase the quality unless you are pushing over 100meg.

Well, my experience, less worry if you have 1 GBPS port.

Unfortunately using 1gig is illadvised in all gameserver setups due to other reasons which we don't need to get into on the forum.

Also there is not "less worry", since there is no "worry" to begin with at 100mbit/s.

Your RAM will definitely limit you..games like TF2 and COD can use like half a gig each.

If you let them, they will. Systems make use of as much RAM as they can at all times.

Balance your servers across the 8 physical cores and you should get excellent performance from that server.

Setup everything you wanted and then get an idea if you are using close to all of the memory, but you won't be getting 400 slots from 4GB RAM. If necessary upgrade to 8GB of memory and you will have a nicely balanced system.
