How do you know your Managed VPS provider is taking care of security?

    Hi all,

If you are using a Managed VPS, how do you know that your provider is keeping your server security up-to-date?

Have you heard of a provider who didn't prevent an intrusion but then were impressive about cleaning it up and keeping the customer informed?

I ask as I'm trying to select a Managed VPS host and having them be on top of security is my main priority.

    Many thanks,

    Eliot

Usually, company's that offer Managed Services keep their customer informed when they perform updates system wide or if any threat has been released where they recommend doing an update. However, different company's also have various definitions of the term "Managed".

That is something that you should ask your perspective companies. They will be the ones that best know the answer, as Atony said, there's a different definition of "managed" company to company.

You can ask if the VPS provider can be PCI compliant.

You could always ask them to email you a list of updates they do for you .

PCI Complaince has little to do with host security itself that is only small portion of PCI DSS so if host cannot be PCI DSS compliant it does not mean that they do not care about your security. For Instance they have to have the ability to NAT all access to VPSes and have some VPSes without public ip addresses to get you compliant, which is not always the case.

You can do some checking yourself.
Make sure your software is kept updated, eg. cPanel, etc.

the easiest way to check update is to try to update yourself if there are packages to upgrade it means that the host did not upgrade them. But it would be quite difficult especially for somebody who is not an expert sys admin to ascertain other less obvious things like firewall settings, apache configuration or even things as simple as sshv1 or sslv2 enabled on his sytem

Indeed, also ask the provider what their definition of managed is.
