Question

Another vBulletin Community Server Question

Hey guys,

I just bought my first house (YAY!) and now I'm anticipating tightening the belt.

Right now I have a Q9300 @ 2.5ghz with 8gb of ram, 700gb harddrive running Windows Server 2003 64 bit.

We only have ~3000 members, less than a million posts, and peak at 200 users online at once. I do have a shoutbox, I do have the arcade, I'm a plugin whore.

Am I way over powered or am I at a good spot? I recycle the apache and MySql service daily at Noon and Midnight. It's only been an hour since the recycle, but I'm sitting at about 2gb of ram in use right now with CPU utilization averaging about 30% (fluctuating between 10% and 60%). I'm looking to find a cheaper server and I found one a little cheaper but if I'm way over powered then I'd be willing to go with something less powerful as long as the timeliness of pages being served doesn't degrade.

I also see the Atom Dual Core processors - I thought Atom processors were for netbooks? Are they even comparable to other processors?

Just looking for some advice.

From my past experience, you might want to consider using chat like IRC instead of shoutboxes.
Shoutboxes have been a serious drain on my server's resources with constant refreshes, especially when left idle in a tab by guests who didn't even notice the presence of the shoutbox.

I've been using Inferno shoutbox which is nice - you can set an idle limit so it will stop refreshing after so much time.

Edit: And guests do not have access to the shoutbox.

Thanks!

What do you guys think about the server? Am I going too over the top?
