A managed vps is "managed" by your provider. In the case of a unmanaged vps, you would be responsible for upgrading, configuring and installing items yourself. Some providers, even though you purchase a un-managed VPS would still help you out with certain things.

SolusVM or HyperVM?
Thats really a personal preference. Both do basically the same thing. HyperVM offers more features but I prefer SolusVM mainly because it is less clutterd and is updated more frequently and it does the job.

To add to this, HyperVM hasn't been updated in absolute ages and very well may never get updated again.

I suggest you get a managed VPS, as I am just guessing you probably aren't used to managing your own servers. Hostdime tops the list for the best managed VPS company imo, better than Wiredtree.

Hostdime is nice, they have servers in a lot of places at a reasonable price. ie india and israel.

If by offshore you mean anywhere off of the US Shoreline, then Hostdime. If you're looking for a VPS in the Netherlands, there's not a single reputable company in my eyes that does that.

From what I understand HyperVM is open source now... I'm not sure if it's being actively developed however.

A managed VPS is where your provider will configure and secure it and then assist you with the server when you need it from installing software to fixing issues as they arise. Unless you know how to manage a server from top to bottom you won't want to go with an unmanaged solution.

As for HyperVM and SolusVM - they are just control panels for watching CPU/Ram/Disk/Transfer and reinstalling the OS, Rebooting the VPS, etc... They technically both do the same thing however I have used both and prefer SolusVM personally.

In the case of managed server you just say what you want to be set up on the server and the provider does it.

Also consider that control panels like cPanel make server management very easy, so some people choose the unmanaged with cpanel instead of managed.

Unmanaged hosting plan means that users has to do configuration, additional software install, customizations, maintenance and backup on its own.

Managed VPS means that hosting provider should provide administration without additional costs which usually includes : custom configuration of users needs, installation of additional software by demand, periodical backup.
