Need suggestions on Magento-centric hosting services

    Hi -

I have a pretty small magento store right now (about 500 products) that does pretty well using HostMonster hosting. Lately, though their service has sucked - MySQL server crashes (which kills a magento store)along with militant CPU throttling has impacted our business and it's time to look at other hosting services.

What I would love to find is something that is really geared / optimized for Magento stability...and won't break the bank!

One place that was listed via Magento as a hosting partner was Nexcess.net = not bad price-wise and I'm going to look on the forums for some reviews.

    Thanks!

I have a client that's been hosted on the Nexcess SIP-200 plan for 8 months without problems. Magento is a very demanding application, and even with frontend optimizations, good performance requires a high end server, especially if it's shared. Nexcess has been top-notch in terms of uptime and performance.

Support was quick and responsive with my pre-sales questions as well as few minor support tickets at the beginning.

I moved the client to Nexcess after several months of poor performance on Crucial Web Hosting's semi-dedicated plan which was actually more expensive.

thanks for that head's up. I got into work this morning, fired up the site and AGAIN it was down. Tech support said that their guys were working on this to supposedly correct this from happening again today, but after 4 times in the last month I can't really say that I believe them.

Overall Nexcess looked like they had what we needed and after today I think it's a done deal!

    Hello,

Magento is a leading application CMS system that is widely used now. I have no idea about Nexcess Hosting company, but if would like to bring to your notice that to be very careful while transfering magento from one server to another.

    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Inox

    Hi, globalshawn

    Thanks for your nice link.

It looks a nice site but if $20/mo would be too expensive? Anyone have any experiences on this hosting company?

    Thanks in advance,

While I have never hosted with them, I would tend to agree with RSkeens and put more faith in Ratepoint reviews than the other link. Some of those reviews were talking about them using junk servers, when it seems (could be false advertising?) that they use a good amount of high end equipment.

    Anyone ever host with them?

If you nose around in the Magento forums you will see that Simple Helix has had some mixed reviews. Don't hold me to it, but I believe the company was sold a year or two ago and new ownership has been working hard to become a solid Magento provider, and has went through a complete upgrading of their hardware in late 2009 which did cause some customer issues.

They seem to be very responsive to sales inquiries. My biggest issue with them is they put 50 clients on a server for a $75 per month plan. That's a bunch. See https://www.simplehelix.com/hosting/...article&id=104

Some Magento hosting experts claim a non VPS shared environment yields the best results. Nexcess holds to this stance with their SIP plans. Greg over there told me the SIP 200 plan only has 13 clients on the box for maximum resources availability.

Sonassi, a UK host that boosts one of the fastest Magento speeds only allows approximately 8 stores per server. See http://magebenchmark.sonassi.com/

Thus far I have had 3 Magento providers tell me the semi dedicated shared environment is optimal. James from Aspiration who posted earlier in this thread recommended his Inspire 4 VPS plan that costs $150 w/4 GB of ram. He does have a Magento demo store on his site and it moves well, but it's not on a VPS is my understanding.

Well as far as I understand RatePoint allows you to hide the negative reviews and only shows positive reviews from clients, which is why I am not a huge fan of them.

P/S: Do correct me if I am wrong on this understanding.

Correct, but Hostjury deletes fraudulent reviews posted by the friends of company owners, so it can't be trusted, is a sham, is a fraud, is owned by an *******, etc.

Let's not throw the thread off course now

    Aspiration Hosting

Just want to add my 2 pennies here

I have been using Magento for for about 10 months now, and did loads of research, primarily on the Magento forums then with targeted questions to a number of hosts that I had shortlisted. I am just starting out so my primary concern was a good value shared hosting package with all the features and experience to run Magento smoothly and quickly, and with good support.

I went for Aspiration and, so far, I'm so pleased I did. Promise I am nothing to do with them, just a satisfied customer and wanted to write something up somewhere, as they've recently helped me resolve another support issue, albeit this particular issue was not of my making. I am amazed at how responsive they are, especially considering the relatively low cost of the package.

Great value for money, support, performance, and geared up for Magento. Honestly, give them a go.

Sorting by lowest rating tends to give you an idea of how bad things can go but you have to keep in mind that there are 160+ reviews and only a hand full of bad reviews.

Any company with enough customers is going to eventually net some negative reviews... It's the customer that chooses the provider and since no provider is best for every situation there are bound to be customers who sign up with expectations that the provider simply cannot meet... Short version is that you can't please everybody.

I worked with a web development firm that did about a dozen Magento integrations (design/development), and they always recommended SimpleHelix to their clients. Based on their recommendation, I signed up as well. I was previously on DreamHost shared hosting which was not fast enough. Although I only ran with SH for a few months, I never had any problems with them. For a robust platform like Magento they were definitely faster, but since I never had a need for their customer service, I can't speak for it.
