Hosting a medium - large user base forum?
Right now just to get it setup I am hosting it at justhost. However, i know I will probably want to go with a more heavy traffic friendly server later correct? What is a good place to do this where I am getting the server I need to support the traffic, but am not killing my wallet
I was thinking Media Temple's Grid-Service. Is that more then I would need, or not really a good idea for forum hosting?

How many users do you have online at any time?
What forum software are you using? Do you have a chatbox or similar?

Did you read reviews about MT lately? if not, I suggest you to search about them before to signup.

It's a gaming league of four game ladders, and we are looking at about 500-700 users after launch. We've brought some testers in to test out the "beta" of it, and it's looking like we'll have a good size user base at first around 500-700.
We are built off of phpbb3 and are using an AJAX chat service that goes off of the dB for phpbb (pulling usernames).
I have done very little research of media temple specifically, I just had heard good things. I'm mostly just looking for a good strong server that is roughly 20-25 a month, that can handle the traffic.

It depends on ur forum size and needs, you may want to switch to a VPS and then to a dedicated once you start getting heavy traffic.

I think you will need a semi-dedicated server or go with VPS for the requirements above. Maybe you can find a great VPS offer on the WHT's offer section.

Yes, it sounds like you need a VPS or dedicated server for that kind of traffic.

For some smaller forums I have ran in the past I have used dreamhost.com they were better than siteground but not by much. I would recommend finding a reasonably priced shared host which offer a decent server share, you want to ensure that whoever you go with has the resources to carry your sites.
I have also used cheap VPS services before and to be honest they were little better than cheap shared hosting, except they burnt a bigger hole in my wallet.
Media Temple definately seem to have the talk on their site, whether or not the service matches I wouldn't be able to comment as never used their services.
How big do you forsee your site being in the near future? What is you maximum budget being realistic?

Guys - if you want to argue do it in PMs.
@OP - it's not so important how big your member base is as much as how many of them are going to be active simultaneously. From what I've read JustHost tends to be on the lower end of the shared hosting scale so make sure you keep your own off-provider backups just in case.
How many visitors do you see active at one time on average?

I don't think an unmetered solution is what you are looking for in my opinion. If you are going to be using a lot of bandwidth then unmetered is the way to go but I think what matters to you is CPU power and Dedicated RAM. A VPS does provide you the benefit of giving you dedicated RAM and Burstable RAM. But ensure you have the right amount to meet your needs.
MySQL performance is essential, if your queries are lagging it will cause issues.

You can have a look at VPSNET offers.

I would probably go with a scalable VPS solution or a small dedicated server depending on the rate you grow at.

Agree'd - scalable VPS would be the best way to go to start off with as anything could happen and shared hosting probably won't cut it. You can then upgrade to a small dedicated server when the time comes

I agree, this should be the route you take.

Why does everyone continue to agree with the poster above them, is it to get your signature noticed or what. It has no relevancy other than that.
