HostGator's $10 share hosting is FASTER than Knownhost and Linode's VPS ???

    Hi everyone,

I used to host a software download site with HostGator's sharehosting for a few years, since the my bandwidth was over 700G last year, I thought it's time to cancel share hosting and upgrade to VPS , but maybe I'm wrong after compare to Knownhost and Linode.

Because Knownhost and linode had very good reputation on WHT, so I go with them and setup 3 test download links on Hostgator(tx node), Knownhost(tx node) and Linode(tx node).

I run test on two VPSs in CA and London :

    1)Location CA:
4.93M/s from Hostgator, 1.39M/s from Knownhost's VPS. 2.83M/s from Linode.
    2)Location Lodon:
2.15M/s from Hostgator, 1.40M/s from Knownhost's VPS, 1.77M/s from Linode.

I've tested for times, but results are almost the same.
Since I running sites for download only, Should I "upgrade" to Knownhost /linode , or just stay with HostGator?

the download speed is limit by the network port.
100M dedicated network port will let you get more quickly to download files.

perhaps choose dedicated server with 100M network ports will more suitable your needed.

There have been more then one thread where the discussion on using these types of tests or benchmarks as a definitive measure of a host/VPS is generally considered not a good way of comparing hosts.

There are so many variables outside of the host/network that you have to take these results with a grain of salt. Having said that I was able to get much faster download speeds from LA/TX/KA/UK to KH (and a few others I tested) then your results (up to 56.6M/s).

I'll use my Ramhost.us account as another example. That VPS is capped to a 20 megabits connection and I was maxing that out at about 2.8M/s. Unless there is something wrong with your setup I know KH VPS accounts are not capped to (around) 10 megabits, so your results seem a bit off to me.

Network speed is different from actual server speed, so the title of the thread is somewhat misleading.

Another point to keep in mind is someone else in the world doing the same test will likely have completely entirely different results than you due to the way the internet is wired, so you cannot assume that because you get good speeds that everyone else will (which is a bit weird that you got the same result from 2 different locations).

Speed will depend on network routes and other factors.

    Hi Nnyan,
I've contacted with KH, they admited their vps accounts are limitied to 10Mbps for security reasons.

So, that's the reason why I got very same download speed in CA and London.

This can easily be lifted if you really need it. For most clients it's not a requirement as they'd rather not get a hefty bandwidth overage bill when someone decides to sit on your website and download over and over again. Yes, it's happened many times and the 10 mbit works fine. Your ISP also may play a role into this as they may limit speeds.

I completely agree. I have been able to frequently achieve 73M/s at Linode. OP is obviously a noob.

Linodes are normally capped at 50Mbps upstream, although they raise this on request if it's warranted.
