Root access without SSH or Telnet

If you have a virtual server with root access, can you do everything you need to do and configure without using SSH or telnet? If so, how?

That's the problem? What control panels allow to do everything you can do with SSH? I don't think C Panel, Ensim or H Sphere do, and I've used them all.

I doubt any will, think of something like compiling a new copy of Apache. How would that work.

There is a control panel that makes you do *almost* everything, it is webmin. It makes you change virtually all the configuration files available on the server.

No control panel ever will do *all* what you can do with ssh.

You should be able to do everything at the console without having to use ssh or telnet.

What's a console? Something like a control panel that's run server-side?

He means if you are in the dc with the machine.. you don't need to use an ssh client.. great if you aren't miles away from your machine but otherwise useless

Just poking fun.

I've seen so many posts lately that refer to SSH as if it was a shell, when it's just a protocol/program used for remote logins.

And of course, this one.

btw, both cpanel and webmin i know for a fact have virtual terminal that's basically web based so you can issue command line commands over your browser, cpanel has a telnet applet and webmin has a thing which doesn't use telnet.

That's good to know that Webmin will do root functions without using a java-based applet like C Panel.

Why not just use SSH?
