Actually we are developing an application to do just that. I think it's a good idea. Hope you do well with it.

Yes. It is a great idea.
Add features like push email and groupware functionality. The market is not crowded and we have seen some success with our clients who are offering it.

Email hosting is an ideal solution for businesses that want to share messages, calendars, and contacts but without the cost and hassles of setting up their own email server.
Well, all the best for your email hosting service

For a lot of people, email hosting is more important than web hosting. It is still the killer application for the Internet. There is definitely a market for email hosting services if you target the market right.

The main problem for email hosting service is GMail. GMail is free and it works well enough for most people. GMail does not leave much of the email hosting market for anybody else. You can't try to offer the same thing as GMail as expect to do well. You'll need to offer email hosting solutions that do things that GMail does not do, which may mean things that are special case (like groupware functions).

Then on the other end of the spectrum, you have web hosting companies including email hosting services with each website. That takes away some of the email hosting market as well. You will need to make sure you offer email related features that typical web hosting does not cover. Again, that may be groupware related features.

We have had clients request it in the past, but we normally just provide them with a normal shared hosting package. It works out just easier for us and also the clients.

In my experience with email hosting, the thing that tends to offer the most buzz is Hosted Exchange.

If you are going to provide Exchange hosted email, go ahead

If you are going to provide normal hosted email, you will need more planning

This is something I've been moving away from.
I just setup the DNS to point to Google Apps for every domain and my clients and extremely happy and so am I.

Long are the days of offering subpar spam filter to my clients. Not to mention the cost savings of no longer needing a dedicated machine to filtering.

I think it's a good idea. You should be able to maintain the security of the clients' email account. I believe you should be able to provide any unique application to compete with the market.
