Tragedy strikes on 1st day of 2010 Winter Olympics
A tragic accident during luge practice run today at 2010 Winter Olympics.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Kumaritashvili family.

Very tragic. Have such accidents occurred in past Winter Olympic games?

This is the first in luge to ever have the athlete actually go outside of the track. They are built to contain both the sled and the athlete. This has been reported as a freak accident. Very dangerous sport. My God, I can't imaging going 145 KM per hour (around 90 MPH) while lying on a small sled.

I heard about that yesterday. It seems this Olympic isn't off to a good start at all... with the opening ceremony and the lack of snow and what not.

I heard about this a couple of hours after it happened and was shocked.
I sat down with my wife yesterday to watch the next Luge trial runs. Lets just say that watching the first person go down that track was an eary feeling.
I'm soooo happy and pleased nothing was cancelled!

O what a shame. Lets hope they win some gold medals to try to make up for it.
