To transfer a domain, do you need to remove private registration first?
I have some domains with Name.com expiring in 12 days, and am thinking about transferring them (possibly to NameCheap). They all have private registration though. I did a few searches, and saw some threads where people said that if you wanted to transfer from GoDaddy then you would need to remove the private registration first. Is it like that for all registrars?

I'd start by asking Name.com and NameCheap,
but I would be surprised if you did not need to change the privicy protect.
Obviously you'll also need to check the domains are not 'locked'
and you'll prob nead the EPP codes as well.

I know when I transferred from namecheap to name.com I had to remove privacy protection first. I would imagine it's the same the other way (name.com to namecheap).
P.S.
Why would you want to leave name.com for namecheap?

GoDaddy does insist the protection is removed first, as they told me directly that they will not forward emails sent to the protected address, causing all efforts to transfer to fail. That made me wonder if they were dropping all mail sent there, or only transfers that would lose them customers.
<rant>
They lost me for sure, for this and various other reasons. My only dealings with them are for clients, or names I've bought, which get moved without fail on day 61 of the 60 day embargo they enforce.

Name.com's private registration fails to forward email from certain domains (like Comcast and Zoho.com). I have contacted their support a few times about it, and they are unable to fix it.

It depends on the kind of privacy protection offered, if all the privacy protected domains have the same email id, then it has to be removed before transfer.

Cancel private protection, then renew it and then transfer

Hello SLweb,
If their forwarding is not working then you will definitely need to disable the privacy to receive our authorization email. Thank you very much for considering us.

That's odd. I can confirm that I have received messages sent to the privacy protected address, which (in my experience) is [domainname]@domainsbyproxy.com so if they told you that, it must only be valid for transfers/authcode requests.
FWIW, their privacy protection system does allow you to configure what you want to do with email they receive on your behalf:
. Forward all email
. Filter for Spam and then forward remaining email
. Do not forward any email
Can't be certain that I've received every email ever sent there, but the same can be said for any email address.
GoDaddy tends to get a bad rap around here, but they've got the fastest transfer out process (min: minutes, max: < 24 hours) of all the registrar's I've used.

Yes, then it is best to disable it if there are forwarding issues. Disable it, then unlock it, then initiate the transfer. At least that's the way I did it.

Anything you do often enough you tend to get a little faster at. I don't personally know anyone that voluntarily keeps names there any more, though I'm sure they exist.
The did indeed tell me that, but implied it was no mail at all that gets forwarded. To me, privacy protection means it stays on from day one, not that it has lapses for any reason at any time, otherwise, what's the point of paying for it?

Indeed, I know of at least one person.

Must have changed since then. I just requested an auth code on a privacy protected domain registered at godaddy and received it.
Code:
From: emailservice@domainsbyproxy.com
To: me
Subject: FWD: #########.COM >> Information You Requested [#########.com@domainsbyproxy.com]
The authorization information you requested is as follows:
Domain Name: #########.COM
Authorization Info: ################
Since I can get the auth code, I guess I'll just have to try a transfer to see what happens...

I have transferred domains from Name.com to GoDaddy.com which had private registration. No problem at all. Because you actually get the emails with Name.com's private registration.
To the OP > In most cases you don't need to remove the private registration first at Name.com. So the thing to do is to try it with the private registration, if it doesn't work (which it should), then remove the privacy and re-initiate the transfer.

Interesting that you got the email thru the private registration address. I just tried to transfer one of my domains to NameCheap, and NameCheap said that they would send an email to the administration contact. But I never received that email, and instead I got an email directly from NameCheap asking for the EPP code. So now the transfer is pending. I'll probably have to transfer all of my domains, since I'm having problems with Name.com's private registration email forwarding again today.

Perhaps it's just GD to Enom, then? Each and every attempt to move that latest name met with silence at GD's end, and after the third try that's what I was told, emphatically and without ambiguity.
Removed the privacy, it was done quickly.
I'd be rather interested to learn if this is only with certain registrars, or maybe something I'd needed to set and hadn't and the GD rep was wrong. That happens, but he wasn't at all unsure, it seemed.
