Help with Bandwidth DDoS Attack

Hi guys for over 6 months I have been successfully coloing two servers which primarily host my game servers. Recently 1 of our server has been under some form of bandiwidth attack.

Before i go ahead i would like to say that i am no expert and still am learning the ropes with servers. However i have come somewhat far in successfully running two servers, setting up the right applications etc, i do web dev and also IT support, server managment is somewhat new to me.

As you can imagine the bandwidth on one of the servers has rocketed. It also dosent allow me to RDP to the box thats how bad it is.

We have a standard firewall installed, We have taken off all ports. DC have told us that somebody has been trying to bruteforce a gameserver password which we are hosting.

I have been doing some research and have found that installing necessary ddos software should help. But there are so much out there and dont know which would best suit my needs and most importantly whether it would work or not.

Before making this thread i read upon banning certain ip addresses that are affecting the server, i have yet to do this.

We are running a

Windows 2003 Server
Quad Core Intel Xeon X3360, 2.83GHz, 4GB Ram

Any advice, help, links would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Kayz,

Do you have an idea on which IP's are using all the bandwidth? Do you have a static IP address, in which case can you block all RDP access apart from your IP address?

Regards,

Jacob

Yes i have a static ip address and from the best of my knowledge our main server ip address seems to be taking brunt of it.

Do you have a firewall in front of your servers? If so, create a policy so that RDP is only open for specific IPs. All of my servers RDP/SSH are only open from a handfull of IPs. It stops people from trying to login.
