Hosting Companies Unite to Provide Relief for Haiti. And You Can Help.
On January 12th, a series of earthquakes measuring 6.5 to 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated Haiti. There is now a critical shortage of essential supplies and support personnel to assist the people of Haiti through this crisis.
Although normally fiercely competitive, as members of the hosting community we know that the power we wield as a group is much more than we can wield individually. And so we've come together to help assist those affected by this disaster. With the generosity of all our combined customers,we hope to make a difference. And you can too. One dollar helps. One hundred dollars helps one hundred times more.
Come join Rackspace, ServInt, ThePlanet, GoGrid, Peer1 & others in the Haiti Relief Effort. We've partnered with the American Red Cross to provide support, which may include mobilizing relief workers, sending relief supplies, and providing financial resources for recovery.
Go to http://hostingforhaiti.com/ for details.

Indeed together we can do a ton..

sorry I don't get it. Did these hosting companies donate money? How exactly does a hosting company donate relief workers and supplies?

Most of us are indeed donating money, but it isn't an explicit requirement. The involved companies are simply banding together to reach out to our clients and to spread the word that help is vitally needed. And asking other hosts to join us to do the same. The idea is to try to take advantage of our unique reach. We're all in this industry because we think the Internet is an amazing tool that can accomplish world-changing things. We're just trying to do our part.

Wonderful! We're seeing a lot of great traffic on the #hostingforhaiti hashtag and tons of traffic to the site.
A huge shoutout to Rob Lagesse for being the catalyst for the project, which seems to be really galvanizing people in our community (popularity of this thread notwithstanding).

I announced a free hosting for Haiti relief workers, but it is nice to see hosting companies are working for victims as a helping consortium .

WHT is such a large community, with 250k+ members, if iNet Interactive created a centralized PayPal account and everyone donated $1.69, iNet Interactive could write The Red Cross a check for $250,000.

Given that all members are active on the site? I don't think so... Realistically you'd be looking at more like $25,000. Maybe.

Well give all the inactive members an incentive.

"Hurry! Come back to WebHostingTalk so you can donate to our relief fund! Click here to donate now!"
I think this would have the opposite effect. You have to remember that not everyone is interested in doing a donation, regardless of the situation. Personally I did donate, however I know others who are quite strong against doing so.

Depends on what stand-point you look at it from. Lets say there were only 25,000 active members, iNet Interactive could make a marketing campaign real fast with a little thinking and do an even trade with those 25,000 active members.
